Principal HL7 Integration Engineer

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal HL7 Integration Engineer based in United States.

This role offers the opportunity to lead complex healthcare technology integrations that connect critical clinical systems and improve patient care workflows.
You will serve as a technical expert responsible for designing, implementing, validating, and optimizing HL7 integration solutions across enterprise healthcare environments.
The position combines deep healthcare IT expertise, integration architecture, project leadership, and customer collaboration.
You will work closely with clinical teams, technical stakeholders, vendors, and internal experts to deliver reliable and scalable solutions.
As a trusted technical leader, you will influence best practices, mentor peers, and drive innovation in medical informatics.
This is a remote opportunity for an experienced integration professional passionate about healthcare technology and solving complex technical challenges.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead end-to-end HL7 integration projects, including architecture design, implementation, configuration, validation, testing, and production deployment across healthcare technology solutions.
  • Serve as the primary technical resource for complex healthcare integrations involving clinical systems such as EMR, PACS, RIS, CVIS, VNA, LIS, pathology, and other third-party platforms.
  • Design and implement inbound, outbound, and bidirectional HL7 integration workflows while ensuring secure and reliable data exchange.
  • Develop enterprise-level integration solutions, including data migrations, interface development, data conversion, and reusable integration patterns.
  • Configure secure communication solutions using technologies such as TLS, VPNs, certificates, and encryption standards.
  • Collaborate with project management teams, customers, vendors, sales teams, technical support, and internal stakeholders to deliver successful implementations.
  • Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including solution designs, best practices, specifications, validation procedures, and test plans.
  • Troubleshoot complex integration issues, provide technical guidance, and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction throughout project lifecycles.
  • Participate in internal initiatives, knowledge-sharing activities, and subject matter expert programs to improve team capabilities.
  • Mentor and coach peers by transferring technical knowledge, supporting professional development, and promoting integration best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations, quality standards, and established operational procedures.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree, engineering degree, or equivalent experience in computer science, information technology, or a related technical field.
  • 6–8+ years of experience working with HL7 integration in hospital or healthcare environments.
  • Expert knowledge of HL7 v2 standards, including ADT, ORM, ORU, SIU, DFT, and MDM messages.
  • Strong understanding of healthcare interoperability standards, including DICOM, FHIR, and IHE profiles.
  • Hands-on experience integrating healthcare systems such as EMR, PACS, RIS, LIS, VNA, cardiology, radiology, and clinical information platforms.
  • Experience with interface engines such as Iguana, Rhapsody, Mirth Connect, Cloverleaf, CorePoint, Ensemble, or similar technologies.
  • Strong knowledge of relational databases, including Oracle and SQL Server.
  • Proficiency with scripting languages such as Lua, JavaScript, Python, or similar technologies for data transformation and automation.
  • Experience with healthcare workflows, medical imaging environments, and enterprise clinical system integrations.
  • Familiarity with IT infrastructure concepts, including Windows environments, servers, networking, TCP/IP, virtualization, remote access, and system availability.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, decision-making, and project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and lead projects with minimal supervision.
  • Certifications in HL7, CompTIA Security+, Windows networking, or related technologies are considered a plus.
