Job Description

Carlington Community Health Centre is seeking a compassionate, skilled Mental Health Counsellor — Adults to join our inter-professional team. This role provides integrated, holistic primary health and social services for adults in the community. The Mental Health Counsellor will provide psychotherapy, counselling, psychoeducation, advocacy and crisis intervention functions and will participate in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programs and services related to adult/individual mental wellness in the community, with an emphasis on outreach and related activities to at-risk and/or socially marginalized adult community members.

The role is a regular part-time (0.8 FTE) and reports to the Integrated Health Services Manager of Clinical Operations and Program Services.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Master's degree from a recognized university in a relevant discipline (i.e. psychology, social work, psycho-education) or other health and social services field with relevant training and experience in providing psychotherapy.
  • A member with a professional regulatory College in Ontario allowing for the practice the Controlled Act of Psychotherapy (College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario or Ontario College of Social Workers & Social Service Workers).

Professional experience

  • Three to five years full-time relevant experience in a community setting, preferably in adult mental health providing counselling and psychotherapy.
  • Experience in providing psychotherapy, preferably with an adult population.
  • Experience in providing community-based mental health and counselling services including crisis intervention, group work, referral, and advocacy.
  • Experience with a range of evidence-based counselling approaches such as cognitive behaviourial therapy, narrative therapy, family focused therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy and strength based practices preferred.
  • Experience in group education and knowledge of adult learning principles and experience in facilitating groups.
  • Experience and interest in working with marginalized and diverse clientele, such as low-income, high needs, 2SLGBTQ, newcomer, and a variety of multicultural communities
  • Experience in health promotion including community development.
  • Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Experience in a non-profit, community-based organization.

Key Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of and proficiency in current assessment, counselling, and intervention techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of the use of evidence-based treatment approaches to address common clinical presentations in adult mental health, such as anxiety and depression, grief/loss, addictions and trauma, adjustment and psycho-social development issues, and distressing parent-child, peer, and family relationship issues.
  • Ability to structure, facilitate and evaluate the therapy process in a collaborative manner with adults and relevant stakeholders
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of community resources and community-based health care, as well as issues affecting people such as intimate partner violence, family violence and community violence.
  • Knowledge of and experience with a harm reduction approach.
  • In-depth knowledge of utilizing a variety of current clinical assessment frameworks, especially trauma informed, bio-psycho-social assessments, spiritual assessments, intimidate partner violence safety assessments and strength-based assessments. Additionally, clinical skills and knowledge in crisis intervention and safety planning, case management, advocacy and outreach
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, oral and written.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Knowledge of and experience with group dynamics and group facilitation approaches
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use of computers and various software applications, including Microsoft Office programs, client database software, and electronic record keeping in a client services setting.
  • Bilingualism (French / English) preferred, a third language is an asset
