IRIS (Integrated Refugee & Immigrant Services) is a statewide non-profit seeking a hands-on, mission-driven Accounting Manager to join our Finance & Accounting team.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of the organization while actively managing payroll administration and ensuring compliance with nonprofit accounting standards. This position supervises accounting staff, including the Staff Accountant, and Grant Accountant, and is responsible for financial reporting, grant accounting oversight, payroll processing, audit preparation, internal controls, and compliance with federal, state, and donor requirements.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional with strong nonprofit accounting experience and the ability to process, review, and reconcile payroll while managing a high-performing accounting team.

- A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field required
- CPA preferred.
- Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive accounting experience.
- Minimum of 3 years of supervisory experience.
- Demonstrated hands-on payroll processing and payroll management experience.
- Nonprofit accounting and grant management experience strongly preferred.
- Experience supporting annual audits and financial statement preparation.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit fund accounting.
- Thorough understanding of payroll laws, payroll tax reporting, and employee benefit accounting.
- Experience allocating payroll costs across multiple programs and grants.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience with accounting systems such as Sage Intacct, MIP Fund Accounting, NetSuite, or Financial Edge.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving abilities
- High level of accuracy, integrity, and confidentiality.
- Experience with federal and state grants.
- Knowledge of Uniform Guidance and Single Audit requirements.
- Experience with ADP Workforce Now, Paychex, UKG, or similar payroll platforms
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Accounting Operations
- Manage the general ledger and oversee all accounting functions.
- Supervise monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes.
- Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and financial transactions.
- Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Maintain compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Monitor cash flow and assist with treasury management activities.
Payroll Administration and Oversight
- Process and/or oversee biweekly and off-cycle payroll.
- Review payroll data, earnings, deductions, benefits, and tax withholdings for accuracy.
- Ensure payroll compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
- Reconcile payroll-related general ledger accounts and benefit accruals.
- Prepare and review payroll journal entries.
- Coordinate payroll changes, including new hires, terminations, salary adjustments, and benefit enrollments.
- Manage relationships with payroll service providers (ADP Workday)
- Support year-end payroll activities, including W-2 preparation and payroll tax filings.
- Ensure accurate allocation of payroll costs among grants, programs, and departments.
- Maintain confidentiality of employee compensation and payroll records.
Grant Accounting Oversight
- Supervise the Grant Accountant and review grant-related financial activities.
- Ensure proper accounting and reporting of restricted and unrestricted funds.
- Monitor grant expenditures and compliance with funding requirements.
- Review grant financial reports and reimbursement requests.
- Collaborate with program managers to ensure expenditures remain within approved budgets.
Financial Reporting and Budgeting
- Prepare and review monthly financial statements and management reports.
- Assist with annual operating and program budgets.
- Analyze budget-to-actual variances and provide recommendations.
- Prepare reports for executive leadership, finance committees, and the Board of Directors.
- Support forecasting and long-term financial planning initiatives.
Audit and Compliance
- Coordinate annual financial statement audits and Single Audits.
- Prepare audit schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
- Assist with Form 990 preparation and regulatory filings.
- Ensure compliance with Uniform Guidance and grant regulations, where applicable.
- Strengthen and maintain internal accounting controls.
Staff Supervision
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, including the Senior Accountant, Staff Accountant, and Grant Accountant.
- Assign responsibilities, monitor workflow, and establish performance expectations.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and development.
- Promote cross-training and continuous process improvement.

WORKING CONDITIONS
- Must be based in Connecticut.
- Hybrid/remote work environment, with periodic in-person meetings at IRIS offices in New Haven, CT.
- Ability to work effectively in office and remote environments and maintain regular engagement with Finance, Programs, Development, and Legal teams.
Location: Connecticut (Hybrid/Remote).
Salary Range: $85,000 - $95,000 annually, salary range is based on organization size commensurate with experience, education, and qualifications.
Job Type: Full time (exempt), 40 hours/week, Biweekly Payroll.
