Job Description

Halco Group

Halco Group is a Southeast Michigan company that owns and operates several businesses across the automotive sector, real estate and more. Our automotive group includes auto service centers, towing and car wash operations, with about 120 team members. We grow by acquisition, and we are building a leadership team to match.

Join a growing organization where performance is recognized, leadership is developed, and career advancement is earned.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a hands-on Corporate Controller to own the numbers across Halco Group and its 13 entities.

This is not a hands-off finance role. You will close the books, run cash, build the processes, and tell ownership where profit is won and lost. You will lead our in-house AP/AR team, manage our outsourced bookkeeping firm and CPA, and make decisions without waiting for direction.

You will report directly to the CEO and sit on the leadership team beside Operations and People.

What You’ll OwnMonth-End Close & Reporting
  • Own the monthly close and consolidation across 13 entities: auto service, towing, car wash, child care and real estate.
  • Deliver a consolidated monthly package by business day 10, then day 7.
  • Build store-level P&Ls, entity P&Ls and a one-page CEO dashboard.
  • Own intercompany accounting, balance sheet reconciliations and loan reconciliations.
Profitability
  • Own store gross profit, payroll as a percent of sales, parts and inventory leakage, and vendor terms.
  • Partner weekly with the District Manager on store performance and labor targets.
  • Find profit leaks and bring recommendations with a dollar value attached.
Cash & Treasury
  • Build and maintain a 13-week cash forecast.
  • Run vendor payment cycles, bank relationships, loans, covenants and lines of credit.
  • Own AR, merchant deposits and cash reconciliation across all locations.
Process & Controls
  • Write and enforce SOPs for AR, AP, cash, parts reconciliation and chargebacks.
  • Set approval limits, segregation of duties and fraud controls.
  • Hold the team and store managers to close deadlines.
Team & Outside Partners
  • Lead and develop our AP/AR staff.
  • Manage our outsourced bookkeeping firm to a clear service standard.
  • Coordinate tax and entity work with our CPA firm and attorneys.
Growth & Structure
  • Model acquisitions, real estate deals and leases.
  • Build lender and landlord financial packages.
  • Integrate newly acquired locations onto our books within 30 days.
  • Drive cleanup of entity structure, management fees and intercompany balances.
Systems
  • Own our accounting stack (QuickBooks Online today) and recommend what comes next.
  • Connect accounting and operational data into live reporting.
Who We’re Looking For

You will likely succeed in this position if you are:

  • Hands-on. You will reconcile an account yourself on day one.
  • An owner. You close loops without being chased.
  • Decisive. You make the call inside your lane and report after.
  • Commercial. You bring ideas to make money, not just reports.
  • A clear communicator who can explain a P&L to a store manager in two minutes.
  • Comfortable building structure where structure is missing.
Qualifications
  • 8+ years in accounting and finance, including 4+ years leading a team.
  • Controller or Assistant Controller experience in a multi-entity, multi-location business.
  • Multi-unit retail or service background strongly preferred: auto dealer or service groups, franchise operators, restaurant groups, collision or tire chains.
  • Multi-entity close, consolidation and intercompany experience, including S-corps and real estate holding LLCs.
  • Experience building SOPs and internal controls from scratch.
  • Experience managing an outsourced bookkeeping or accounting firm.
  • Lender, covenant and acquisition modeling experience.
  • Advanced Excel and QuickBooks Online. Sage Intacct or NetSuite experience a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required. CPA strongly preferred.

We place greater emphasis on demonstrated results, judgment and ownership than on credentials alone.

What We Offer
  • $150,000 to $175,000 base, based on experience
  • Performance bonus up to 25% of base, tied to company profitability and close quality
  • Medical, dental and vision
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • 401(k) with Company Match
  • A direct line to the CEO, a seat on the leadership team and a finance function that grows as we grow, with a path to VP Finance or CFO

We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
