Job Overview

1. Construction interns support project managers and the quality team on highway heavy civil construction projects. This internship offers hands-on experience in field operations, project coordination, safety compliance, and quality control, while providing opportunities to gain experience from industry professionals. This is a fully in-person position, with no hybrid or remote work. Interns are assigned to a project and will work out of a project office.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Utilize construction technology and software such as Vista Viewpoint, HCSS, Bluebeam, and others.
2. Build relationships and communicate with the team, owners, design partners, and subcontractors.
3. Utilize GPS units to track quantities in the field.
4. Support with project layout, staging, and quantity takeoffs.
5. Participate in project meetings, including planning, scheduling, and coordination meetings.
6. Assist Project Managers, Superintendents, and Foreman with field activities.
7. Support the coordination of subcontractors to help maintain project schedules.
8. Assist with quality processes such as QC checklists, pre-activity meetings, quality standdowns, and rework.
9. Partner with the Safety Team in promoting safe worksite practices and procedures.
10. Support the Estimating team in upcoming project bids.
11. Collect, review, and track trucking tickets for material quantities and job cost reporting.
12. Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Work Environment

1. Work for this role is conducted across both traditional office settings and active outdoor construction project sites. There is consistent exposure to various weather conditions, airborne dust, site materials, and elevated noise levels. Field duties require navigating rough, uneven terrain and maintaining situational awareness while operating near heavy equipment, power tools, and live vehicular traffic. There is exposure to heights exceeding 50 feet and depths reaching 80 feet or more in construction environments. Compliance with safety protocols while performing tasks in this work environment is required.

Physical Demands

1. The physical demands that are described are representative of but not limited to the physical exertion generally required to perform the essential job functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for long periods of time while using a keyboard, and there are active site responsibilities that require prolonged standing and walking. Occasionally required to lift, carry, push, pull, and reach overhead materials up to 20 pounds, along with frequent gross manipulation using their hands. The visual requirements include demonstrating or having vision corrected to 20/20. In general, this position includes sedentary work that primarily involves sitting and/or standing as well as repeating motions that include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Junior or Senior pursuing a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or related.
2. Interest and knowledge of the heavy highway construction industry.
3. Desire to gain hands-on experience in the office and field by shadowing knowledgeable professionals.
4. Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
5. Ability to manage time and handle multiple tasks at once.
6. Demonstrated ability to use software programs including MS Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
7. Knowledge of safety requirements, policies, and any required safety training.
