Under general supervision of the Deputy Chief, The Police Service Officer (PSO) is a non-sworn, civilian position that supports the operations of the Brownstown Police Department, with primary responsibility for jail/detention operations and records/clerical functions. PSOs perform prisoner intake and monitoring, records processing, front desk and telephone duties, and other administrative and support tasks that do not require full police powers. This position requires strong judgment, professionalism, confidentiality, and the ability to work in a secure law enforcement environment.

PSOs perform prisoner intake and monitoring, records processing, front desk and telephone duties, and other administrative and support tasks that do not require full police powers. Jail and Detention Operations
- Receive, search, and process prisoners during intake and release in accordance with department policy and legal requirements.
- Conduct prisoner booking procedures including fingerprinting, photographing, property inventory, and data entry.
- Inventory, receipt, safeguard, and release prisoner property and evidence as assigned.
- Screen prisoners for medical, mental health, and safety concerns and notify supervisory or medical personnel as required.
- Monitor prisoners through direct observation and audio/video systems.
- Conduct and document required safety and welfare checks.
- Maintain secure custody standards and control access to detention areas.
- Prepare and process booking paperwork, court documents, warrants, and related records.
- Coordinate meals, hygiene needs, and basic care of prisoners.
- Conduct routine inspections of cells and detention areas for cleanliness, safety, and contraband.
- Collect money for prisoner bonds and other monetary fees.
- Fingerprint applicants, employees, and court-ordered individuals for licensing, employment, or background checks.
- Testify in court regarding prisoner handling, records, and chain-of-custody when required.
- Provide professional customer service at the police front desk and by telephone.
- Answer and route non-emergency calls.
- Provide general information and directions to the public.
- Receive walk-in complaints and assist with report initiation where authorized .
- Make radio or telephone notifications to officers and staff as directed.
- Receive, review, process, and file police reports, citations, warrants, and other law enforcement documents.
- Enter, retrieve, and update information in department records systems and state/federal databases, including LEIN and related systems.
- Perform records searches and provide authorized information to officers, prosecutors, courts, and approved external requestors.
- Maintain records integrity, retention, and confidentiality in compliance with law and policy.
- Operate department computer systems, records software, detention systems, and standard office equipment.
- Assist with the proper handling, logging, and storing of evidence under the supervision of the evidence custodian.
- Assist officers and detectives with administrative tasks, file management, and document preparation.
- Perform other related duties as assigned, consistent with the scope of a civilian support position.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Minimum age of 18 years at time of appointment.
- U.S. citizen or legally authorized to work in the United States.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.
- Valid Michigan driver's license with satisfactory driving record.
- No felony convictions and no disqualifying misdemeanor convictions.
- Demonstrated good moral character and background suitable for law enforcement support work.
- Basic computer proficiency required.
Candidates must successfully complete a department selection process, which may include:
- Oral interview
- Background investigation
- Psychological evaluation
- Pre-employment medical examination and drug screening
- Working knowledge of modern office practices, records management, and data entry procedures.
- Ability to learn and properly apply department policies, procedures, and applicable laws related to detention and records.
- Ability to operate law enforcement records systems and related software accurately.
- Ability to interact and communicate clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing, with the public, prisoners, officers, and partner agencies.
- Ability to manage interpersonal interactions and maintain order in a controlled custody setting.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of criminal justice information.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks with accuracy.
- Ability to work independently while following established procedures.
