The San Francisco SPCA is working hard to make change and we need your help!

As many know, a growing shortage of veterinarians is impacting hundreds of thousands of California’s shelter and companion animals. We’re seeing delays in medical treatment, overcrowding in the shelters, and more outbreaks of disease. Sometimes, shelters are left with no other option than to euthanize treatable, adoptable pets, while some pet guardians are forced to surrender their animals because they cannot get the care they need.

The San Francisco SPCA is seeking qualified, experienced veterinary assistants and Registered Veterinary Technicians who want to contribute to our goals by helping to fill open shifts with our Central Valley shelter partners in the Visalia, Hanford, Fresno and Stockton areas. Interested professionals with proven veterinary medicine skills, a commitment to teamwork, a positive attitude for problem solving and communication, and the desire to learn and grow should apply. Previous experience in High Quality High Volume Spay Neuter (HQHVSN), animal welfare or shelter setting is preferred.

Shifts are scheduled based upon your availability.

Essential Duties:

• Assist with pre-surgical patient examinations
• Prepare patients for surgery and assist in surgery
• Perform venipuncture, laboratory tests, IV catheter placement and drug and fluid calculations as ordered by the veterinary staff
• Perform intramuscular and subcutaneous injections
• Induce and maintain anesthesia
• Clean and pack surgical instruments
• Operate an autoclave
• Facilitate good working relationships through teamwork and collaboration
• Follow veterinary care protocols for animals as determined by the staff at the partner shelter - including medical, behavior, and general care protocols for the health and well-being of the animals; individually and as a herd
• Comply with all laws pertaining to controlled substances – may be trained to draw up, log, and administer controlled drugs

Salary and Benefits

Compensation is $24 per hour for Veterinary Assistants, and $28 per hour for RVTs during HQHVSN clinics (approximately 8 hours)
