Advanced Laser Systems Technology (ALST) has an immediate opening for a Sr. Specialist, Mechanical Design Engineer. Requirements:

JOB SUMMARY

The Mechanical Design Engineer is part of a multi-disciplinary design team developing advanced laser range finders and laser designators for use in military airborne, maritime and ground vehicle applications. This position is responsible for the electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical design, layout, of Laser Range Finder and Target Designator systems, starting with concept layouts to final detail drawings. Must be capable of devising solutions to complex engineering problems both independently and by soliciting input from other technical subject matter experts across the organization.

The Mechanical Design Engineer works independently as well as with other stakeholders to provide technical direction that will drive the success of all programs. This typically includes working closely with internal and external customers while guiding our team. May be personally responsible for portions of the design and documentation efforts.

This is an onsite position.

COMPLEXITY & PROBLEM SOLVING

Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of information requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Devises solutions based on limited information and precedent and adapts existing approaches to resolve issues. Uses evaluation, judgment, and interpretation to select right course of action. Work is done independently and is reviewed at critical points.

COLLABORATION & INTERACTION

Enhances relationships and networks with senior internal/external partners who are not familiar with the subject matter often requiring persuasion. Adapts style to differing audiences and often advises others on difficult matters.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs mechanical design of high reliability military subsystems using Solidworks 2026.
  • Familiarity with SW PDM tools and requirements
  • Generates and /or process engineering change orders (ECN’s) as required, working with CM organization.
  • Develop reviews and approves engineering documentation, including product specification, drawings, assembly procedures and test plans.
  • Perform, guide or review various types of engineering analyses including basic stress analysis and tolerance analysis
  • Support the assembly, integration and test of products or prototypes.
  • Perform and document structural and analysis utilizing classical techniques and preliminary finite element analysis to establish the validity of proposed designs.
  • Provide input or performs thermal analysis, flow analysis, and vibration analysis.
  • Work with other mechanical engineers to optimize designs for structural and thermal performance.
  • Support the creation of technical performance specifications and assist Purchasing Dept. with procurement of items as necessary.
  • Analyzes mechanical requirements to determine feasibility of design within time and cost constraints.
  • Investigate solutions to product or process problems.
  • Adhere to budget and schedule commitments.
  • Prepare and review documentation in accordance with contract requirements and/or internal standards.
  • Perform estimates for manpower and other resources factors for analysis-related tasks.
  • Ensure quality through adherence to the Quality Systems Manual, applicable Standard Work Instructions and other standards invoked internally or contractually.
  • Works with other engineers, technicians, manufacturing and quality engineers in a team environment.
  • Work is performed within set boundaries with minimal direct supervision.
  • Follows strategic direction set by Program and functional leadership.
  • Travel (10 - 20%) as required to meet critical schedule milestones.

REQUIRED CAPABILITIES

  • U.S. Citizenship required due to government contract requirements.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain US security clearance.
  • Ability to work additional hours to meet customer and schedule requirements.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with a wide array of professional levels and functions.
  • Experience with opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical designs for miliary tactical products
  • Experience with GD&T application and interpretation
  • Proficiency with hands-on engineering support of manufacturing.
  • Ability to perform classical hand calculations and interpret convergence data to validate finite element analysis results.
  • Must be capable of devising solutions to engineering problems both independently and by soliciting input from other technical subject matter experts across the organization.
  • Experience transitioning designs from prototype to production, including support for Low-Rate Initial Production.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with AutoCAD, LabVIEW and Xilinx.
  • Ability to prepare or lead the preparation of part lists.
  • Ability to work in a small organization with a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of DFM and DFA techniques
  • Knowledge of engineering change document preparation and impact assessments.

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 6 years or Graduate Degree and minimum of 4 years of prior relevant experience.
  • 6+ years of mechanical engineering experience with concentration in EO, opto-mechanical and or laser focus in the defense industry.
  • 6+ years recent experience with SolidWorks
  • 4+ years’ experience writing technical documentation and developing analysis reports.
  • 4+ years’ experience with CAD software
  • 4+ years’ experience with GD&T and drawing standards.
  • 4+ years’ experience with manufacturing methods and design for manufacturability
