About New York Common Pantry
New York Common Pantry is one of the city’s largest hunger relief organizations, providing food assistance, case management services, senior food provision, nutrition education, and hygiene services. We are a dynamic, mission-driven organization experiencing rapid growth and expansion.
NYCP is a poverty-fighting organization that reduces hunger and promotes dignity, health, and self-sufficiency by using a holistic approach. Last year, we assisted over 800,000 visitors, served over 12.5 million meals, and accessed $10.8 million in public benefits resources for our guests. Through an array of programs that we offer, we look to establish long-term stability for those we serve.
The Opportunity
As NYCP professionalizes its leadership structure to match its scale, the Chief Finance and Administration Officer (CFAO) is a newly elevated, senior-most role on the organization's executive team, alongside the Chief Program & Strategy Officer and the Chief Development Officer, all reporting to the CEO. The CFAO serves as a trusted strategic advisor to the CEO and Board of Directors, and is accountable for the full range of finance, operations, facilities, human resources, technology, and legal/compliance functions that keep NYCP running — freeing program and development leadership to focus on service delivery and external relations. This is a unique opportunity for a strategic, hands-on executive to build institutional capacity, modernize systems, and shape the infrastructure behind one of New York City's most trusted anti-hunger organizations.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Strategy
Oversee all aspects of NYCP's financial operations, including accounting, payroll, procurement, accounts payable, and the general ledger.
Lead annual budget development, multi-year forecasting, and monthly financial reporting (balance sheets, income statements, cash flow), ensuring alignment with organizational and programmatic goals.
Monitor financial performance and advise the CEO, Board, and program leadership on trends, risks, and opportunities to optimize spending, diversify revenue, and improve efficiency.
Develop program-specific and site-specific financial reporting to give program leadership a clear, granular view of operating performance across NYCP's multiple locations and funding streams.
Audit, Compliance & Risk Management
Manage the annual independent audit and Form 990 process, and maintain a compliant, well-documented internal control environment.
Ensure compliance with government contract and grant requirements (including USDA and NY State funding), and develop a defensible cost-allocation methodology across NYCP's programs.
Oversee organizational legal matters, including contracts, leases, insurance, and risk management, engaging outside counsel as needed.
Operations & Facilities
Direct operations across NYCP's brick-and-mortar sites, warehouse and food storage/distribution hub, and mobile distribution network, partnering with the Assistant Vice President of Operations and Food Sourcing leadership on procurement, logistics, and vendor management.
Ensure NYCP's facilities are safe, well-maintained, and positioned to support continued programmatic growth, including oversight of capital projects and major equipment investments.
Oversee general office administration and administrative support functions across NYCP's sites.
Human Resources
Oversee NYCP's Human Resources function, including recruitment, onboarding, compensation and benefits administration, performance management, and employee relations.
Supervise the Assistant Vice President of Human Resources and the HR team, ensuring HR capacity grows in step with NYCP's programmatic expansion.
Champion staff engagement, retention, and professional development initiatives, fostering a healthy organizational culture as NYCP scales.
Technology & Information Systems
Partnering with the Assistant Vice President of Operations, set strategy for NYCP's technology infrastructure, including financial, case management, and data systems, ensuring security, reliability, and staff capacity to use them effectively.
Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new systems and interactive dashboards that give staff, leadership, and the Board timely, actionable data.
Team & Organizational Leadership
Supervise, mentor, and build out the Finance, HR and Operations teams as NYCP's administrative infrastructure continues to scale.
Serve as a core member of the executive team, partnering with the CEO and peer Chief Officers on organizational strategy, the annual strategic plan, and Board reporting.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree required (Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field); CPA and/or advanced degree (MBA, MPA) preferred.
10–15+ years of progressively responsible finance and/or operations leadership experience, ideally including nonprofit or human-services accounting, government contracts, and multi-site operations.
Demonstrated success leading financial systems transitions and technology-driven operational improvements.
Deep understanding of nonprofit accounting principles, financial regulations, and reporting standards, including experience managing complex, multi-funder budgets.
Experience overseeing facilities, procurement, and/or logistics functions, ideally across multiple sites.
Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills paired with a hands-on, collaborative approach suited to a growing, mission-driven organization.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate financial and operational information for non-financial audiences, including the Board of Directors.
A genuine commitment to NYCP's mission of reducing hunger and promoting dignity, health, and self-sufficiency for New Yorkers in need.
