Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY
The Medical Assistant provides clinical and administrative support to physicians and other clinical personnel in the gender-affirming care and treatment of surgical patients. This position assists with patient intake, vital signs, and exam or procedure room preparation, and performs certain administrative functions, including maintenance and ordering of medical supply inventory and occasional clerical assistance. The role works under the direction of the physician and clinical staff and follows established protocols, escalating clinical questions outside its scope to a physician or supervising clinician. Because patients are often navigating a deeply personal and long-anticipated stage of their transition, this role requires genuine warmth, patience, and respect, which includes using each patient's correct name and pronouns, maintaining dignity during patient interactions, and providing steady, reassuring support.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Prepares examination and procedure rooms, ensuring instruments, supplies, and equipment are ready before each patient visit.
• Rooms patients, obtains and records vital signs, and prepares patients for physician examination or in-office procedures.
• Assists physicians and other clinical personnel during examinations, procedures, and minor in-office surgical services.
• Performs basic clinical tasks such as specimen collection, wound care assistance, and administration of medications as directed and within scope of practice.
• Cleans, sterilizes, and restocks instruments and supplies between patient visits in accordance with infection-control protocols.
• Maintains and orders medical supply inventory, monitoring stock levels and expiration dates.
• Documents patient care, vital signs, and clinical information accurately in the electronic health record.
• Provides occasional clerical support, such as scheduling, answering phones, and processing patient paperwork.
• Communicates with patients regarding preparation instructions, follow-up care, and general inquiries under physician direction.
• Maintains regular and reliable attendance sufficient to meet the position’s operational, patient-service, and team obligations, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Complies with applicable laws, regulations, accreditation requirements, privacy and security standards, and organizational policies relevant to the position.
• Other duties as assigned.
The essential functions listed are intended to describe the fundamental duties of the position. A qualified individual must be able to perform these functions with or without reasonable accommodation. The organization will engage in a timely, good-faith interactive process when an accommodation is requested or the need for accommodation is known.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Education: High school diploma or equivalent required; graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program required.
• Experience: One year of patient care experience, including both front-office and back-office duties, preferred; recent Medical Assistant program graduates with clinical rotation experience will also be considered.
• Licensure/Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Knowledge/Skills: Ability to read and comprehend instructions, correspondence, and memos, and to write simple correspondence; ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small-group situations to patients, families, and coworkers; ability to perform basic arithmetic and calculations related to medication dosages and administration; ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, coworkers, and other members of the care team.
• Other: Must be able to pass a background check as required for employment in a healthcare setting and meet the facility’s immunization requirements for clinical personnel.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) credential; prior experience in a surgical or procedural specialty practice; bilingual language skills.
