General Responsibility
The Bag Jammer / Manual Encoder is responsible for maintaining the smooth operation of the Baggage Handling System (BHS) at Burbank International Airport by ensuring the continuous flow of passenger luggage through manual intervention, clearing bag jams, and encoding untagged or unreadable bags at manual encoding stations.
This position plays a critical front-line role in supporting system uptime and on-time flight departures. The Bag Jammer / Manual Encoder works closely with maintenance technicians, control room operators, and airline staff to ensure all baggage is processed safely, accurately, and efficiently in compliance with airport security and operational procedures.
Key Responsibilities
· Monitor assigned areas of the BHS for baggage jams, blockages, or system interruptions and respond promptly to clear them safely and efficiently.
· Operate manual encoding stations to input baggage tag information when automated systems fail to read or process a bag.
· Communicate with the control room and operations staff regarding system status, conveyor stoppages, or irregular baggage flow.
· Follow all established safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and PPE requirements, when working near moving equipment.
· Inspect conveyors, diverters, and scanners visually for debris, obstruction, or potential issues while performing jam-clearing duties.
· Accurately record incidents, jam counts, and manual encoding data as required by the Supervisor.
· Support technicians and control room staff in identifying recurring system issues for preventive maintenance action.
· Maintain awareness of system operating zones, emergency stops, and safe work clearances.
· Keep assigned work areas clean, organized, and free from debris or foreign objects.
· Uphold PBP Services’ standards for professionalism, safety, and operational excellence.
Requirements:Qualifications and Experience
· High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
· Prior experience in an airport, warehouse, or industrial conveyor environment preferred.
· Basic understanding of mechanical systems and safe work practices around automated equipment.
· Ability to learn and follow written and verbal instructions and complete reports accurately.
· Comfortable working in fast-paced, safety-critical environments.
· Must be able to stand, walk, climb, and work in confined or elevated spaces for extended periods.
· Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
· Availability for shift work, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
· Valid U.S. driver’s license and ability to meet company insurability and airport badging requirements.
