Achilles is recruiting a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for a manufacturer of custom automated packaging and processing machinery in Elgin, IL. This is a true cradle-to-grave machine-design role. You will take custom automation projects from initial requirements through 3D design, detailed drawings, release to manufacturing, assembly support, and ultimately working equipment. The right candidate will have strong SolidWorks experience and a background designing automated machinery rather than components in isolation.

• Design custom automated machinery using SolidWorks

• Create detailed 3D models, assemblies, and production drawings

• Take mechanical designs from initial project kickoff through working machine completion

• Develop new machine concepts and improve existing equipment designs

• Research components, materials, and design approaches for future equipment

• Release and maintain designs through ERP and engineering-document-control systems

• Collaborate with electrical controls engineers on complete machine systems

• Work with manufacturing and machine builders to resolve design and assembly questions

• Partner with sales and project teams to ensure equipment meets customer requirements, schedule, and budget

• Provide technical support to customers and field-service personnel when needed

• Ensure machinery meets applicable safety and engineering standards

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or 5+ years of relevant automated machinery design experience

• Strong SolidWorks 3D CAD experience

• Hands-on experience designing automated machinery

• Experience taking machinery from concept through detailed design and build

• Strong mechanical problem-solving ability

• Ability to design with manufacturability, assembly, safety, cost, and serviceability in mind

• Strong attention to detail and ability to manage project deadlines

Experience with automated packaging equipment is especially valuable.

• Filling or packaging machinery

• Conveyors

• Bottling or container-handling equipment

• Pharmaceutical, cosmetic, chemical, food, or consumer-products machinery

• Hazardous-location / HazLoc equipment

• ERP-based engineering release processes

Travel is limited and is typically less than 5%. This position is based on-site in Elgin, IL.
