Job Title: Laboratory Medical Technologist
Summary
The Laboratory Medical Technologist performs a wide range of clinical analyses in all sections of the laboratory by properly utilizing a variety of methodologies and instrumentation according to laboratory policies and procedures and in accordance with all regulatory agency requirements in order to provide results of the highest level of quality to physicians and their patients. Primary responsibilities include culture and susceptibility testing, specimen processing and rapid testing to support the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.
Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Responsibilities
- Receives specimens submitted to the laboratory
- Utilizes policies and procedures for requisition and specimen requirements to determine whether the specimen can be processed for analysis
- Assures proper storage and procedures for specimens that cannot be immediately analyzed
- Phlebotomy; Collects and labels multiple sample types
- Performs chemical analysis on specimens
- Answers inquiries regarding specimen handling, results and other technical information Appropriately assists clinical staff with requests and seeks out resources necessary when information is not available to answer questions
- Practices the proficient and safe use of all equipment necessary for the completion of all duties and responsibilities by following all maintenance, safety and quality control policies and procedures
- Analyzes all test and quality control results for errors, inconsistencies and deviations prior to reporting results. Initiates and documents troubleshooting and problem solving to resolve issues
- Reports all test results in EPIC system according to laboratory policies and procedures, within states turn-around times, and follows appropriate backup procedures during computer downtimes
- Communicates any pertinent information or problems with the laboratory in a proactive and respectful manner
- Recognizing and responding to emergencies
- Accurate use of EPIC for the verification of sample receipt, result inquiry, data collection and reporting
- Perform, monitor, and document quality control for all testing
- Perform and document routine instrument maintenance and calibrations; troubleshoot instrument problems
- Review pending logs and interface transaction monitor to ensure results are populating patients’ medical records in EPIC
- Accurately reprint results and forward to medical records for scanning into the patient's chart
- Document all notifications and chart appropriate data to the patient’s medical record per department specific criteria
- Handles and disposes of potentially hazardous material
- Maintains safe and clean work environment by utilizing personal protective equipment and safety devices appropriately
- Participate in Safety and Infection Control activities
- Stock and monitor inventory of laboratory supplies and promptly notify management of shortages
- Assisting in maintaining a safe, clean work environment and stocking supplies if needed
- Completing other comparable duties and assignments as directed by the Clinical Staff Manager
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
Education
- Associate degree (medical or basic sciences) or equivalent
Certifications/Licensure
- Certified by the American Society for Clinical Pathologists (MT/ASCP), American Medical Technologists (MT), or International Society for Clinical Laboratory Technology (RMT) preferred
- Registered as a Medical Laboratory Technician/Medical Technologist preferred
Experience
- Minimum 2 years clinical laboratory experience
- Phlebotomy experience preferred
Technical Skills
- Possess good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Windows-based computer applications. Able to interact with computers to enter data or process information

- Must be available to work a flexible schedule to meet the demands of a changing scheduling environment and accommodate the needs of the practice
- Must be a self-starter, highly organized with good time management skills
- Able to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing
- Must be able to work well and communicate professionally with physicians, patients and staff. Able to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others and maintain them over time
- Capable of prioritizing tasks
- Ability to carry out a variety of instructions

Base salary offers for this position may vary based on factors such as location, skills and relevant experience.
