The Health Information Management team at Crouse Health is hiring a Maternity Registrar.

Schedule: Full-Time, Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm, additional coverage as needed (Holidays, Weekends, etc.)

Pay Range: $19.89 - $31.85 / hour

HIM Assistant II Position Responsibilities:

  • Professionally work with patients/parents in order to obtain necessary information related to the birth certificate; some require use of the language line.
  • Provides daily rounding on the units to collaborate with Charge Nurse to ensure birth certificate packets are collected prior to discharge and patients with questions/needs are addressed.
  • Works with floor nurses, Social Work, Labor & Delivery Leadership on needs, education, feedback for patients and staff.
  • Provides customer service support to patients: in person, phone calls, emails and mailings.
  • Trained on NYS legal requirements for NYS Birth Certificate creation which involves paternity, marital status, acknowledgement of Parentage and surrogacy/adoption laws.
  • Trained on basic clinical abstracting from the medical record for NYSDOH SPDS abstracting.
  • Accurately performs proofing and submission of Electronic Birth Certificates (EBC) to NYS via SPDS.
  • Works with the local and state bureaus of Vital Statistics in addition to the Putative Father Registry.
  • Obtains and submits properly signed birth certificates, fetal death certificates, and Acknowledgment of Parentage in a timely and orderly fashion.
  • Accurately enters data/statistics into SPDS system (NYS obstetrics statistics).
  • Provides basic education to parents on Social Security and obtaining birth certificates/addendums.
  • Communicates with providers for birth certificate signatures.
  • Assists in the creation of documents for birth certificate collection and nursing/patient education.
  • Attends NYS trainings as offered for up-to-date education.
  • Upholds the highest level of confidentiality in all aspects of the Birth Registrar/HIM position.
  • Assumes other duties as assigned by department leadership.

HIM Assistant II Position Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • One or more years of experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Must pass a medical terminology test with a grade of 75%. Test will be administered by Human Resources.
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office.
  • Must be a critical thinker, able to multi-task, and have strong penmanship and attention to detail.
  • Approval from NYS for HCS/SPDS computer system access required.
