Job Description

About Us

At Intramotev, we are dedicated to liberating tons of freight from congested highways, reducing carbon emissions, and enhancing transportation efficiency. We are deploying self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles to transform freight logistics and modernize a 200-year-old industry.

Based in St. Louis, MO, we are committed to fostering a work environment for every teammate that's welcoming, respectful, and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Project Engineer, Rail to run a multi-year deployment of our self-propelled battery-electric railcars and vehicles on a Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)-regulated short-line railroad. The program runs from regulatory approval through factory and site acceptance, commissioning, and staged on-track testing: remote line-of-sight switching moves, then remote teleoperation, then autonomous freight movements in a revenue-service demonstration. The successful candidate owns the program's integrated schedule, phase gates, and safety documentation, and acts as the day-to-day technical point of contact for the customer railroad and our suppliers.

This is a senior individual-contributor role with no direct reports. You'll direct field engineers and technicians on deployment work. We level candidates by experience, and we'll shape the role around a stronger candidate.

This is a full-time, in-office role based in St. Louis, MO. You'll work within a team of 3–10 engineers and travel frequently within Missouri (up to 50%) to the customer railroad site for commissioning, testing, operator training, and operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Program Execution: Own the integrated program schedule, milestones, and phase-gate reviews from regulatory approval through revenue service; run status meetings and report progress to internal leadership and the customer railroad.

  • Regulatory Coordination: Prepare and maintain the FRA test-program documentation, including the special-approval petition under 49 CFR Part 211, the agreed test conditions, safety performance thresholds, and data-reporting requirements. Coordinate FRA information requests with our regulatory and systems-safety engineers.

  • Safety Documentation: Maintain operating protocols, standard operating procedures, stage-advancement criteria, and the monthly safety performance record that builds into the final Safety Case submitted to FRA.

  • Testing & Commissioning: Plan and lead factory and site acceptance testing for each railcar; plan staged on-track testing; own movement logs and operational data packages; support integration with a legacy locomotive upfitted for multiple-unit (MU) operation.

  • Field Deployment: Lead corridor and site surveys, site integration, and field mobilization at the customer railroad. Build the operator training and certification program and the workforce training curriculum.

  • Customer & Partner Coordination: Serve as the primary technical point of contact for the customer railroad and our suppliers.

  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Direct field engineers and technicians on deployment tasks; bring in our autonomy, software, electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing teams as the program needs them; carry railroad feedback back into product design.

  • Program Controls & Reporting: Produce the quarterly program reports, FRA coordination records, and documented time records that a federally funded program requires.

Compensation & Benefits

Base salary: $110,000–$135,000 plus equity

Intramotev offers a comprehensive benefits package for all team members, including:

  • Medical coverage: We cover 100% of employee medical premiums, plus low-cost dental and vision options.

  • Vacation: Full-time employees enjoy unlimited paid time off.

About You: Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)
  • At least a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or Science.

  • 5+ years of engineering or project-engineering experience.

  • Hands-on rail industry experience at a railroad (Class I, regional, or short line), a rail OEM, or a rail supplier.

  • Experience running an engineering project with external stakeholders through schedule, milestones, and risk management, including serving as the primary technical point of contact for an external customer.

  • Willingness to expand into technical areas beyond your area of expertise; ability to develop innovative and novel approaches to underspecified problems.

  • Open-minded and comfortable working in a teaming environment as an individual contributor and as the technical lead for field deployment work.

  • Fluent in both written and verbal English.

  • U.S. Person (immigration or work visa sponsorship will not be provided).

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)

Candidate should have a working knowledge of one or (ideally) multiple areas listed below:

  • FRA regulations (49 CFR Parts 200–299), including waivers, special approvals, or test programs.

  • System safety practice: hazard analysis, safety cases, or reliability, availability, maintainability, and safety (RAMS) engineering.

  • Field test programs, commissioning, or acceptance testing on rail vehicles or equipment.

  • Short-line or terminal-switching operations, maintenance-of-way, or highway-rail grade crossing safety and engineering.

  • Locomotive or railcar mechanical systems, including MU and air-brake systems.

  • Programs funded by federal grants (FRA, U.S. Department of Transportation): progress reporting, cost share, and compliance.

  • Autonomous, remote-control, or electric rail vehicles.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or an equivalent project-management credential.

Typical Education and Experience

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education (e.g. Bachelor and/or Master) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience, or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. Master + 3 years' related work experience).
