Job Description


This is a student position responsible for assisting in the operations and activities of a department or a departmental project, program, or function. Student assistants work collaboratively with faculty and staff to assist students with academic success strategies, identify on-campus resources and activities, and help students acclimate to the college experience.

QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University. Junior or Senior classification is preferred.

No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided. Current involvement in co-curricular activities is preferred. Excellent time management, self-management and organizational skills are preferred. Ability to relate to students from a variety of backgrounds and abilities is preferred.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Provides office assistance to the department by assisting staff in routine clerical duties and responsibilities.
  2. Coordinate and facilitate class activities.
  3. Coordinate and collaborate with assigned instructor in weekly lesson planning and course curriculum’ may include (but not limited to) presenting topics, facilitating group discussion, sharing personal experiences, and actively reaching out to students.
  4. Attend and participate in meetings and training programs designed for student teaching assistants.
  5. Help students become familiar with university resources, advise, and refer students to appropriate resources when necessary.
  6. Meet one on one with students who require additional assistance and support.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  1. Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of general office and clerical procedures and concept.
  2. Ability to accurately prepare and maintain records and files.
  3. Ability to communicate professionally and courteously with university faculty and staff, students and the general public.
  4. Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  5. Ability to dedicate a minimum of 5 hours per week to SFAS 1101.
  6. Ability to provide support for student development with demonstrable concern for students.
  7. Ability to work effectively and patiently with students.
  8. Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty and staff, students, and the general public.


A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.

Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
