A.T. Still University's Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine (ATSU-KCOM) is seeking a part-time, adjunct faculty member to teach a Spanish for the Health Professions elective course in Kirksville, Missouri. The course meets in person one night per week from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm during the Fall and Spring academic semesters. The incumbent will manage classroom and on-line teaching/learning resources as appropriate, develop an annual practicum examination, coach students through standardized patient engagement learning, assist in planning for ongoing course development and sustainability, and participate in program expansion including recruitment of students for the course. This position reports organizationally to the ATSU-KCOM AHEC Co-Director.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage online Medical Spanish learning modules.
  • Assist with recruitment of students for Medical Spanish course.
  • Assist in planning for ongoing course development and sustainability
  • Conduct approximately (10) one hour live/face-to-face conversations sessions per quarter.
  • Complete student performance assessments, assign and report grades, and provide quarterly report to AHEC office.
  • Provide Medical Spanish pilot course and guide development of program expansion.
Requirements:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor Degree plus post-graduate studies in Spanish-related major required.
  • Three to five years related experience required.
  • Experience conducting college-level courses, including interactive classroom and simulation activities.
  • Intimate knowledge of Spanish as it relates to the medical/dental and healthcare environment.
  • Knowledge of anatomical/environmental terms used in the patient-provider encounter.
  • Relate to medical/dental students as well as standardized patients in Spanish.
  • Provide an overview of Spanish grammar, an introduction to the medical/dental vocabulary in Spanish, together with a development of cultural awareness in the students.
  • Assist students to practice everyday situations that might be encountered in the typical medical/dental encounter where an accurate understanding of the patient's complaint is required.
  • Manage classroom and text/online Spanish for the Health Professions teaching/learning resources as appropriate.
  • Excellent organizational, written and verbal skills. Attention to detail.
  • Computer skills including Learning Management Systems, such as Canvas and Zoom in the event inclement weather requires shifting the class on-line.

  • Organized self-starter with the ability to prioritize.
  • Ability to engage students in the classroom and on-line.
  • Passionate about the subject with knowledge of Spanish language and vocabulary necessary for effective patient/physician interactions.
  • Knowledge of academic course implementation strategies and processes.
  • Computer skills to include Web Conferencing, such as Zoom, and Learning Management Systems, such as Canvas.
  • Works well without direct supervision, but knows when to ask for advice.
