The John Howard Society of Durham Region is currently accepting applications for Fall 2026 student placements in selected program areas. Placement opportunities may include:

• Harm Reduction Outreach Program (Oshawa and community)
• Skills Training for Employment and Post-Secondary (STEP)
• Housing and Residential Services
• Community Justice Programs
• Employment Services
• Other program areas, subject to availability and organizational needs

Please note: All placements are in-person and must meet both the educational requirements of your academic program and the operational needs of the agency.

The John Howard Society of Durham Region is a non-profit charitable organization dedicated to supporting youth, adults, families, and communities through programs focused on justice, housing, employment, education, mental health, harm reduction, and community support.

We value student placements as an opportunity to mentor future professionals while providing meaningful, hands-on learning experiences in community social services.

Applicants will be invited to attend a virtual information session where you will:

• Learn about the John Howard Society of Durham Region
• Hear from program leaders about placement opportunities
• Gain an understanding of placement expectations
• Have the opportunity to ask questions

Attendance at the information session is strongly encouraged and will be considered as part of the placement process. If you are unable to attend, please notify us as soon as possible.

Following the information session, interested applicants will be invited to complete a placement screening application indicating their preferred program area(s).

Applications will then be reviewed by program supervisors to determine which candidates will move forward.

Selected applicants will be invited to interview with the program supervisor or designated placement mentor.

The interview provides an opportunity to discuss:

• Your learning objectives
• Placement expectations
• Schedule requirements
• Suitability of the placement for your educational program

Successful candidates will participate in a mandatory agency orientation prior to beginning their placement.

During orientation, students will:

• Complete onboarding documentation
• Review agency policies and procedures
• Receive required training and orientation materials
• Complete any remaining placement requirements

Additional documentation (such as proof of enrollment, police record checks, immunization records, confidentiality agreements, or other school-specific requirements) may be required prior to the start of placement.
