Job Description
Position Summary
The Wastewater Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the daily operation, maintenance, and compliance of the facility’s wastewater treatment system. This role ensures that all wastewater processes meet local, state, and federal environmental regulations while supporting efficient production operations within a pet food manufacturing environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate daily activities of the wastewater treatment plant and personnel.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations, including EPA, state, and local discharge permits (NPDES as applicable).
- Monitor system performance including pH, flow rates, BOD, COD, TSS, and other key parameters.
- Maintain accurate records, logs, and reports required for regulatory compliance and inspections.
- Oversee sampling, testing, and laboratory analysis of wastewater.
- Troubleshoot system issues, including pumps, aeration systems, clarifiers, chemical dosing, and filtration processes.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance and repairs of wastewater equipment.
- Manage chemical inventory and ensure proper handling, storage, and usage.
- Train and develop wastewater operators and technicians on procedures, safety, and compliance requirements.
- Support environmental audits and inspections by internal teams and regulatory agencies.
- Collaborate with production to minimize wastewater impact and improve sustainability initiatives.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives related to water usage, waste reduction, and cost control.
- Ensure adherence to all company safety policies and environmental best practices.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Engineering, or related field preferred.
- 3–5+ years of experience in wastewater treatment, preferably in food or pet food manufacturing.
- 1–2 years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
Certifications
- Valid Wastewater Treatment Operator License (state-specific; Class B or higher preferred).
- OSHA or environmental compliance training is a plus.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong understanding of biological and chemical wastewater treatment processes.
- Working knowledge of environmental regulations (EPA, NPDES permits, etc.).
- Ability to read and interpret lab results and process control data.
- Experience with pumps, motors, PLC systems, and SCADA systems preferred.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Effective leadership, communication, and team management abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and reporting systems.
Working Conditions
- Work performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, including exposure to varying temperatures and odors.
- May require lifting, standing, walking, and working around industrial equipment.
- On-call availability for emergency situations or system issues.
- Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and climb stairs or ladders as needed.
- Ability to work in confined spaces or around water treatment systems.
