New Beginnings Youth Development Center (NB) is the District of Columbia’s long-term detention center for male and female youth located in Laurel, MD. It is responsible for the care and custody of youth placed in secure detention by court order.
Position Overview
The Assistant Principal serves as the primary instructional leader for the school program operating inside a long-term juvenile detention center. This role is primarily responsible for designing, implementing, monitoring, and continuously improving the school’s instructional model, supervising instructional staff, and ensuring high-quality teaching and learning for all students.
The Assistant Principal leads curriculum implementation, instructional coaching, professional development, data-driven instruction, and instructional compliance. The role requires balancing strong instructional leadership with the unique operational realities of juvenile justice education, including student mobility, interrupted formal education, special education compliance, behavioral challenges, and coordination with correctional staff and external stakeholders. Supervise operations in the principal’s absence. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Instructional LeadershipLead the implementation and continuous improvement of the school’s instructional model across all content areas and grade levels. Ensure instruction is rigorous, engaging, standards-aligned, culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and appropriate for justice-involved youth. Develop systems for lesson planning, instructional delivery, intervention, and academic progress monitoring. Conduct frequent classroom observations, walkthroughs, and instructional coaching cycles. Provide teachers with timely, actionable feedback focused on improving instructional effectiveness and student outcomes. Monitor instructional fidelity and consistency across classrooms and programs. Lead data discussions and instructional planning meetings focused on student achievement and growth. Collaborate with teachers to analyze assessment data and develop targeted instructional interventions.
Staff Supervision & ManagementSupervise and evaluate instructional staff, including teachers, interventionists, instructional aides, substitutes, and related instructional personnel. Support recruitment, onboarding, mentoring, and retention of instructional staff. Develop and facilitate professional development aligned to school goals and identified instructional needs. Address personnel concerns and performance issues in collaboration with the Principal and Human Resources. Assist with instructional staffing schedules, classroom coverage, and teacher assignments.
Curriculum & Academic ProgrammingOversee curriculum implementation and alignment to state standards, graduation requirements, and credit recovery expectations. Assist with the implementation of intervention programs, literacy initiatives, educational technology, and career/technical education programming.
Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management
Complete promptly all records and reports as required by MAS/SFF, OSSE, DYRS, or requested by the principal in collaboration with the principal and other staff members. Assist with planning daily school activities by participating in developing class schedules and teacher assignments. Assist with state assessments, accreditation requirements, school improvement planning, and monitoring visits. Provide direct supervision to the instructional team.
Family & Stakeholder EngagementSupport communication systems that keep stakeholders informed about academic programming and student progress. Represent the school during meetings, audits, monitoring visits, and interagency collaboration efforts.
Other Duties as Assigned

Qualifications
- Master’s degree in educational leadership and/or curriculum and instruction (required)
- Valid OSSE certification or eligible for certification (must be completed within the first 6 months of employment)
- Minimum three years of experience in teaching and/or secondary school administration
- Proven expertise in effective discipline strategies, curriculum development, program evaluation, adolescent development, instructional best practices, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research-based approaches to student learning
- Experience working with opportunity or justice-involved youth (preferred)

Salary and Benefits
Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation salaries are comparable to those of other public charter schools in the District of Columbia area. The pay range for this role is:
