Senior Manager, Risk Operations

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Manager, Risk Operations based in Canada.

This role sits at the heart of a high-growth, tech-enabled risk and insurance operations environment supporting complex workforce programs.
You will lead end-to-end Workers’ Compensation operations, balancing strategic oversight with hands-on execution across claims, underwriting, and risk mitigation.
The position plays a critical role in protecting large volumes of project-based workers across dynamic, fast-moving production environments.
You will act as a key partner to external vendors while ensuring performance, compliance, and service quality across the full claims lifecycle.
This is a player-coach leadership role, combining team management with direct ownership of operational outcomes and program performance.
You will leverage data, insights, and modern AI tools to continuously improve processes and reduce loss frequency and severity.
The environment is fast-paced, collaborative, and highly cross-functional, with strong exposure to senior leadership and strategic decision-making.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead the full Workers’ Compensation program lifecycle, including claims oversight, underwriting operations, risk mitigation, and ongoing program administration.
  • Act as primary operational liaison with the TPA, ensuring strong performance management, SLA adherence, reserving accuracy, and high-quality claims handling.
  • Monitor and analyze loss runs, claim trends, and KPIs to identify risk patterns and implement corrective actions that reduce frequency and severity.
  • Oversee large and complex claims, ensuring appropriate escalation, litigation management, and alignment with program objectives.
  • Design and implement risk mitigation initiatives such as safety programs, return-to-work protocols, and operational best practices.
  • Manage end-to-end underwriting workflows including onboarding, classification, jurisdiction setup, and policy endorsement execution.
  • Lead and develop a team of Workers’ Compensation and claims specialists, ensuring clear priorities, accountability, and balanced workload distribution.
  • Drive vendor accountability and continuously improve operational efficiency through data-driven insights and process optimization.
  • Build and maintain a centralized knowledge base and leverage AI tools to streamline workflows and improve decision-making.
Requirements:
  • 5–8+ years of experience in Workers’ Compensation, insurance operations, or risk management, with exposure to both claims and underwriting.
  • 4+ years of people management experience in a high-volume or fast-scaling environment.
  • Strong knowledge of WC claims lifecycle, reserving practices, and TPA/vendor management.
  • Solid understanding of WC policy structures, classification systems, payroll-based premiums, and audit processes.
  • Proven ability to analyze claims and operational data to identify trends and recommend improvements.
  • Demonstrated experience managing external partners and driving accountability against performance metrics.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex insurance concepts for non-specialist audiences.
  • Risk-oriented mindset with a focus on reducing losses through proactive operational and underwriting decisions.
  • Preferred: experience with large deductible/self-insured WC programs, actuarial reports, or entertainment/media/staffing industries.
  • Preferred: familiarity with EOR/PEO models and certifications such as CPCU or ARM (or in progress).
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary aligned with experience and market benchmarks
  • Unlimited paid time off for flexibility and work-life balance
  • Remote-first role with the ability to work from anywhere in Canada or the USA
  • Comprehensive health and dental coverage
  • Home office support stipend for equipment setup
  • Retirement savings plan with employer matching contribution
  • Learning and development budget to support ongoing growth
  • Monthly allowance toward internet and mobile services.
