We are seeking a Boiler Operator to help support the boiler and chiller plant operations of two (2) locations for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Pittsburgh, PA.

Responsibilities include:

  • Boiler Operator independently operates and maintains utility plant equipment and systems with minimal supervision; maintain one or multiple gas/propane fired water or fire tube boilers equipped with electronic controls, and associated auxiliary control equipment; operate a boiler feed water treatment plant and test the water, adding proper chemicals to boiler feed water if necessary.
  • Observe boiler controls, gauges and charts to make necessary adjustments for proper fuel and airflow to maintain system pressure. Operate the air conditioning management system consisting of an automatic data system for gathering and recording plant and remote air conditioning data.
  • Ability to do the common tasks associated with journeyman duties in a line of work, under close supervision and subject to inspection at the end of each task. Read and record temperatures, pressures, and operating data as required within a boiler pant.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of related experience
  • Operator shall be capable of and will perform the following duties at a minimum as necessary during a shift:
    • Lighting off, warming up, placing in service, and shutting down the boilers, chillers, softeners, RO/DI systems, compressed air systems, vacuum systems, electrical distribution systems, Cogeneration systems
    • Firing on each of the available fuels; natural gas and diesel fuel oil
    • Operating all plant equipment and controls, including start-up and shutdown
    • Gradual warm-up of hot piping system and placing them into service
    • Maintaining water quality to protect the equipment and piping from damage
    • Handling malfunctions and emergency situations. To include emergency or backup generator operation in the central plant
    • Collecting and organizing the equipment and plant performance records
    • Routine equipment maintenance
    • Preparation of equipment for inspections
    • Operation and testing of all safety devices and control equipment
    • Facilitating and monitoring the receipt of fuels and supplies
    • Monitor building automation and fire alarm systems and report any abnormalities
    • Answer the trouble call line, emergency elevator line
  • OSHA Hazard Communication Training
  • OSHA Lockout/Tagout procedures
  • NFPA 70E standard for electrical safety in the workplace
  • Familiar with ASME Boiler Pressure Code
  • Ability to work independently after initial facility training.

Physical Qualifications:

Boiler Operator must be able to perform:

  • Heavy work; lifting of 50 lbs. frequently and 75 lbs. occasionally.
  • Work at heights and climb ladders
  • Work in tight spaces
  • Work in heat – over 100 degrees F.
  • Work in a noisy environment (will be required to wear hearing protection when necessary).
  • Work involving potential hazardous exposures such as asbestos, machine parts, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, and fumes.
  • Ability to function safely while wearing a respirator - Work requiring an OSHA approved respirator and proper fit tested.
  • Standing and bending for long periods of time
  • Ability to distinguish between audible alarms (not hearing impaired).
  • Reading warning signs/signals, at least 20/40 vision in worse eye with or without correction and 20/20 in the better eye with or without correction, and unimpaired depth perception; Be able to distinguish between colors – Red and Green.

The pay range for this role is:
60,000 - 80,000 USD per year(Pittsburgh, PA)
