Job Description:
Our Development & Permits department is seeking a dynamic and motivated Code Compliance Inspector III for our existing structures/code enforcement division.
The successful candidate for this position will be able to do the following:
- Be familiar with codes and ordinances enforced by Department for successful training and management.
- Be a team leader and can build a cohesive team. Providing support and corrective actions with staff when necessary.
- Be familiar with the electronic record keeping system for inspections, be able to use the system workflow and ensure information contained for inspections is correct and within division procedures and policies. Have excellent organizational skills.
- Handle escalated situations in a professional manner and ensure satisfaction is met with all parties involved.
- Manage complex code compliance cases, serving as a primary point of contact for property owners and applicants throughout the required permitting and approval processes to gain compliance.
- Guide owners through regulatory and permitted requirements, coordinating milestones, documentation, inspectors, and corrective actions necessary to achieve and maintain compliance, particularly for projects involving land development, rezoning, and conditional use approvals.
- Conduct field and office-based work to investigate and inspect complex code compliance cases, while providing support and assistance to other inspectors as needed.
- Work closely with property owners, applicants, consultants, and internal departments to establish clear compliance milestones, monitor progress, resolve issues, and facilitate timely completion of required approvals.
- Enjoy working with citizens to understand and resolve code enforcement issues, providing patient, respectful, and solution-focused assistance while helping people navigate requirements and identify practical paths toward compliance.

Required Qualifications:
VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to an associate’s degree in urban planning, environmental health/studies, engineering, or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: In addition to satisfying the vocational/educational standards, this position requires a minimum of four years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES: Requires a valid driver’s license and a driving record that is in compliance with City Driving Standards. Special skills or equipment certification will be required.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

Preferred Qualifications:
Virginia State Board of Housing and Community Development certified Property Maintenance Inspector and Property Maintenance Official, Virginia Association of Zoning Officials certified Zoning Official, Zoning Administrator, and/or Zoning Transportation Manager. Demonstrated experience fostering and maintaining productive working relationships with community organizations and partners. Knowledge and experience working with complex code enforcement cases.
