About This Position

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Performs a variety of assignments in the design, development and support of existing product packaging within Preformed Line Products North American operations. Supports sales and marketing and product engineering with new product packaging design engineering.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Works with product engineers, sales and marketing staff, customers, distributors, packaging suppliers and shippers to manage the design of product packaging.

  1. Reviews, interprets and adheres to company, customer and industry specifications and requirements for packaging and incorporates them into the design.

  1. Works to develop Packaging guidelines and standards to be applied throughout PLP Worldwide operations

  1. Designs and generates CAD drawings and assembly drawings for fabrication of packaging and/or directs and approves the drawings at the supplier. Ensures engineering approval and release of drawings into the internal approval process and document control system.

  1. Establishes and maintains on-going working relationships with suppliers and provides support to expedite the fabrication process. Keeps product development teams appraised of packaging status and related issues.

  1. Obtains pricing and lead time estimates and issues requisitions for new product packaging procurement.

  1. Provides time estimates and schedules of current and future packaging needs.

  1. Evaluated existing product packaging to determine root causes of packaging failures and designs solutions for packaging reinforcements or other changes to enhance the functionality and efficiency of packaging.

  1. Evaluates opportunities to design into the packaging “Green” concepts for improved sustainability to lessen the overall environmental impact and to reduce costs.

  1. Designs packaging for functional strength, low cost, ease of handling and efficiency of shipping using kit concepts and segmentation where feasible. Ensures that packaging designs improve employee safety by appropriately limiting weights and addressing ergonomic assembly and handling issues. Seeks to consolidate packaging where feasible.

  1. Designs stacking, banding and palletizing best practices into packaging designs.

  1. Proactively communicates with PLP domestic plants to solicit feedback on new designs and problems with existing packaging.

  1. Works with the Quality Assurance staff to incorporate packaging standards and specifications into the plant quality systems.

  1. Provides cost estimates and schedules of current and future packaging needs. Provided technical support to purchasing buyers and assists in assembling data for bid packages to packaging vendors.

  1. Provides cost and consequences information regarding materials and processes of packaging design and advice product engineers of preferred methods.

  1. Maintains DOT HAZMAT (ground shipment), IATA (Air and sea shipments) and ISPM 15 certification to allow for in-house crate/custom packaging building along with in- house self-certification for international shipments.

  1. Document and maintain annual Packaging A3.

  1. ISPM record keeping for heat treat pallets; this function is audited monthly by an external auditor.

  1. Make recommendations on equipment to aid operators in product identification & packaging – printers, label applicators, etc.

SKILLS

Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Should be competent in using personal computer applications including word processing, database management, project management and spreadsheets. Should have excellent CAD design experience with experience in PRO/E preferred. Should have very good project management skills. Being able to utilize CAPE Pack software is a bonus.

EDUCATION

Must have an industrial or mechanical engineering degree or equivalent.


EXPERIENCE

Should have 1-3 experience in a Manufacturing/Industrial Engineering position with a specific focus in packaging design engineering. Packaging engineering experience should be focused on industrial products rather than retail packaging where strength, functionality, sustainability and costs are the key design criteria.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must possess mobility to work in a standard plant and office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions, strength to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
