About This Position

POSITION SUMMARY: Provides support in food service and nutrition care activities under the direct supervision of a Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist (LDN) to ensure compliance with patients’ prescribed diet orders. Assists with identifying patients who may be at nutrition risk by applying established screening tools and protocols. Communicates identified risks to the supervising dietitian for evaluation. Does not independently assess, diagnose, or treat nutrition conditions. Implements nutrition-related interventions as delegated by the supervising dietitian, including assisting with individualized menu coordination consistent with prescribed diet orders. Does not independently develop or prescribe nutrition care plans nor provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT). Accurately processes and adjusts patient menu selections in accordance with provider-ordered diets and established nutrition standards. Monitors meal intake and supplement acceptance and documents findings for review by the supervising dietitian. Tracks food intake data, including calorie counts, and reports results to the supervising dietitian for interpretation and further clinical decision-making. This position does not independently provide Medical Nutrition Therapy, perform nutrition assessments, establish nutrition diagnoses, or develop nutrition care plans. All clinical activities are delegated and reviewed by a Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist, who retains responsibility for patient care.

EDUCATION, CREDENTIALS, TRAINING and EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Required:

  • Associate degree in health sciences, nutrition, or related field
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions in English
  • Completion of basic dietetic training by RD/LDN
  • Ability to follow written protocols and direction from RD/LDN

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in health sciences, nutrition, or related field
  • Experience in healthcare, foodservice, or patient services
  • EMR experience

ADDITIONAL SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Incumbent must demonstrate an ability to apply age-appropriate principles of communication and clinical practice relevant to all age groups of patients. Incumbent must demonstrate competence in patient screening and interviewing, obtaining food preferences, non-disease-specific nutrition education, and appropriate EMR documentation as directed by RD/LDN.
