Job Description
Friendly House, Inc., is a 501(c) 3 non-profit agency located in Phoenix, Arizona whose primary function is to provide a variety of educational and social service programming aimed at addressing the needs of low-income individuals and families, vulnerable populations and diverse communities. Additionally, Friendly House operates a charter school, Academia del Pueblo, with the mission to provide an academic environment which promotes a culture of high expectations to students from diverse cultures. Friendly House was organized in 1920 as the Phoenix Americanization Committee by a group of Phoenix citizens with the assistance of the United States Department of Education. In our 100-year history, the work of Friendly House has resulted in building resilient communities that are helping to spur economic development, stabilize neighborhoods and revitalize our city.
Location: Phoenix, AZ (Onsite; 4 days per week, M-TH 11:30AM to 2:00PM)
Employment Type: Part-Time
Salary Range: $20-21 hourly (based on experience)
The GED Instructor is responsible for facilitating GED preparation classes which include personal development and academic success strategies for students with varying academic levels and basic skills deficiencies. Class content introduces learners to topics that will prepare students to pass the official GED exam and enhance college and career preparedness and success such as; interpersonal skills, motivation, study habits, reliability/dependability, adaptability, integrity, professionalism, computer technology basics, and college and career exploration. Standards based areas of instruction consist of the following: Mathematics, Reasoning Through Language Arts (Reading and Writing), Social Studies, and Science. Additionally, Instructors are responsible for incorporating activities that engage students with technology, financial literacy, service learning, and citizenship to empower adult learners to transition to postsecondary and livable-wage employment.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Education or a related field
- 1-year experience and/or training (or an equivalent combination of both)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree Education, or related field
- Experience teaching GED area of study
- Spanish Speaking
Required Certifications /Licensure/Training:
- Eligible or currently holds an AZ Adult Education Teaching Certificate
- IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
Preferred Certifications/Registration: Ability to obtain Adult Education Certificate upon hire
Responsibilities:
- Provides in-person instruction to adults to successfully acquire the knowledge necessary to earn their high school equivalency diploma and develop academic readiness to transition to college or career pathways
- Understands the challenges students go through, and the role of counselors and mentor to participant's development and success
- Implement academic plans that drive instruction
- Develops lesson plans aligned to Adult Education Standards and hold students accountable
- Engages in student assessment and engages in regular review of student progress data
- Maintains accurate student records, required forms and documents, attendance hours, and other documents
- Maintains a growth mindset toward student learning, teaching practice, and personal/collective job-imbedded professional development.
