Job Description
Maymont is a 100-acre historic estate and park located in Richmond, Virginia, offering unique experiences including the historic Maymont Mansion, The Robins Nature Center, arboretum, formal gardens, and habitats for native Virginia wildlife and farm animals. Since 1975, Maymont has been maintained and operated by the nonprofit Maymont Foundation, committed to creating experiences that delight, educate, and inspire its guests.
Maymont Foundation is seeking a Director of Marketing who serves as a key member of the senior leadership team, bridging strategic brand leadership with hands-on creative execution. This role drives Maymont's overall marketing and brand strategy while leading the creative direction across all channels — print, digital, environmental design, and multi-channel campaigns. The Director oversees the marketing team and works cross-functionally with internal departments to advance Maymont's mission through compelling, cohesive communications.
Leadership Expectations
Provide leadership for your team and the larger organization. Engage in strategic planning, analysis and decision making as a member of the senior leadership team committed to achieving organizational goals and budgetary needs. Communicate thoroughly and regularly with all of your staff to share senior level directon and cross-departmental information. Coach and guide your staff to understand and focus on achieving organizational goals and objectives.
- Focus on strategic goals, likewise aligning staff through coaching and guidance on the big picture
- Communicate and collaborate in forthcoming, open, fact-based and collaborative manner
- Develop and propose activities and initiatives for consideration that are aligned with goals and sustainability
- Pursue data-based planning, tracking, analysis and reporting of results
- Lead through purposeful, deliberate, directive management (lead from the front)
- Practice judicious, firm and steady human resource and financial oversight
Essential Functions
Brand & Creative Leadership
- Lead creative direction for Maymont's core brand assets across all communications, events, experiences, and campaigns; serve as the primary voice for visual identity across the organization
- Develop and execute innovative annual and multi-year marketing strategies that strengthens community presence, builds engagement, and supports Maymont's mission and objectives
- Design and oversee the production of promotional materials in a variety of digital and print media for a range of target audiences, seamlessly balancing multiple projects simultaneously
- Enhance organizational voice and messaging across platforms — print, web, digital, and physical/on-site signage — ensuring brand consistency across all touchpoints
- Spokesperson and supportive advocate for organizational mission, goals, and the business model of Maymont
Marketing & Communications Strategy
- Serve as the strategic and creative visionary for the Maymont brand experience, leading plans for campaigns, events, programs, and initiatives
- Serve as primary public relations contact for Maymont
- Create, implement, and measure communications initiatives, including SEO/SEM campaigns, to enhance Maymont's image and position among Richmond's cultural organizations and attractions
- Collaborate with key internal stakeholders on crafting messaging and content aligned with brand reputation strategies
- Build relationships with media outlets and community partners; apply creative approaches to public relations efforts
- Serve as lead on camera spokesperson and fulfill interview needs for any situations that may arise
- Track and analyze media coverage to assess the effectiveness of public relations strategies and identify opportunities for improvement
- Conduct market research and peer benchmarking to expand Maymont's presence and engagement strategy
Team & Project Management
- Supervise the Senior Manager of Brand & Creative Marketing, Communications Manager, Digital Marketing Content Manager and Marketing Traffic Coordinator, overseeing internal production schedules, workflows, budgets, and deadlines
- Provide creative supervision for team members working with visual assets and content production
- Oversee coordination with internal departments to ensure resource needs are effectively anticipated, communicated, and delivered on time
- Work closely with the events team for marketing/promoting all special events
- Collaborate with leadership and other departments to develop marketing plans and adjustments as needed
Vendor & Production Oversight
- Communicate with vendors and service providers related to marketing and events collateral — including cost estimates, design review, and timeline management
- Recommend and oversee new investments in evolving technologies, including new media tools and digital platforms
Fundraising Support
- Partner with the Development team to help create marketing campaigns for fundraising priorities
- Support the growth of Maymont's membership program through strategic marketing and public relations campaigns
Competencies
- Proven ability to design and execute marketing and communications strategies with strong creative, strategic, analytical, and organizational skills
- Superior written and verbal communication skills, including experience creating content across multiple formats and audiences
- Experience with on camera interviews and being spokesperson for organization
- Experience drafting and implementing marketing strategies that support organizational goals
- Experience with project management and use of collaboration software, Asana knowledge a plus
- Positive energy and attitude of flexibility to adaptively respond to any needs
- Involvement and active presence at Maymont and wider community events
- Strong interpersonal skills — able to take direction, give direction, and build productive working relationships across departments and with external stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to manage a team, oversee vendors and consultants, and drive projects to completion on time and on budget
- Skilled at anticipating future trends, developing breakthrough strategies, and consistently exceeding goals
- Experience with or deep passion for arts and culture, horticulture, or environmental conservation is a plus
- Strong collaboration skills are necessary, along with agility in adapting to changing demands
- Crisis communication a plus
Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in business, marketing, communications, or a related field required; advanced degree preferred
- Minimum of 7–10 years of experience in marketing, brand, or communications, with at least 2–3 years in a management or leadership role
- Familiarity with design software such as: Adobe Creative Suite: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects
- Experience with print production and managing print vendors
- Knowledge of SEO/SEM, web analytics tools, and digital/social media platforms
- Video editing, HTML, CSS, WordPress, Sprout Social, and environmental design experience a plus
- Experience with CRM systems and nonprofit fundraising software (Blackbaud a plus)
Physical Demands
- Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and talking for extended periods
- Frequent climbing, bending, stooping, and lifting up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work inside and outside in all weather conditions
- Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
Requirements
- Must be able to pass a background check
- Valid driver's license required with reliable transportation to and from Maymont
