Pharmacy Tech


Position Summary


The Pharmacy Technician supports the In-Office Dispensing (IOD) program by assisting with the preparation, dispensing, inventory management, and documentation of prescription medications for patients of The Urology Group. The technician works closely with providers, nurses, pharmacists (if applicable), and administrative staff to ensure patients receive timely, accurate, and compliant medication services while maintaining exceptional customer service and adherence to state and federal regulations.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Prepare and dispense medications under the supervision of a licensed provider and/or pharmacist, as permitted by state regulations.
  • Process prescriptions accurately and efficiently.
  • Verify patient demographics, insurance information, and medication history.
  • Educate patients on medication pick-up procedures and provide basic medication-related information within scope of practice.
  • Coordinate medication refills and renewal requests.
  • Assist patients with questions regarding medication availability, copays, and dispensing procedures.

  • Maintain accurate medication inventory levels.
  • Monitor stock for expiration dates and remove outdated medications.
  • Order and restock medications and supplies as needed.
  • Track controlled substances and maintain required documentation.
  • Conduct routine inventory audits and reconciliations.

  • Ensure compliance with state pharmacy regulations, DEA requirements, HIPAA, and organizational policies.
  • Maintain accurate dispensing records and patient documentation.
  • Assist with quality assurance activities and internal audits.
  • Report medication discrepancies, errors, or compliance concerns promptly.

  • Process prescription claims through pharmacy management systems.
  • Assist with prior authorizations and specialty medication requirements.
  • Resolve insurance rejections and billing issues.
  • Support patient assistance program applications when appropriate.

  • Answer patient and provider inquiries regarding prescriptions.
  • Coordinate communication between providers, nursing staff, and patients.
  • Maintain dispensing logs, reports, and regulatory records.
  • Participate in workflow improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and patient satisfaction.

    • Required Qualifications


  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Current Pharmacy Technician registration/certification as required by state law.
  • Minimum 1 year of pharmacy technician experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy operations, medication dispensing, and inventory management.
  • Experience with electronic medical records (EMR) and pharmacy software systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service abilities.

    • Preferred Qualifications


  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
  • Experience in a physician practice, specialty pharmacy, urology practice, or ambulatory care setting.
  • Knowledge of urology-related medications, including therapies for BPH, overactive bladder, erectile dysfunction, prostate cancer, and urinary tract conditions.
  • Experience with prior authorizations and specialty medications.

    • Reporting Structure


    Reports to: Practice Manager, Director of Operations, Pharmacy Manager, or designated supervising provider.


    This position plays a critical role in ensuring patients have convenient access to prescribed medications while supporting clinical outcomes and operational excellence within the urology practice.
