Under the supervision of a board registered sonographer, the trainee/student sonographer is responsible for performing cardiac and/or vascular ultrasound procedures on patients of every age utilizing IAC (Echocardiography and/or Vascular Technology), American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), and/or the Society of Vascular Ultrasound (SVU) protocols and best practices to ensure high quality imaging. The trainee/student sonographer is also responsible for assisting physicians and must be knowledgeable about all equipment and supplies that are used in the department. The trainee/student sonographer must notify the interpreting physician of any critical values immediately post procedure and for communicating and documenting the procedure-related information of the procedure into the electronic medical record/digital image cardiovascular storage systems. The trainee/student sonographer must be knowledgeable in the acquisition and storage of images and is also responsible for the operation of ultrasound equipment and patient safety. The trainee/student sonographer contributes to the excellence of care by utilizing the mission, vision and building blocks to guide them. Duties & Responsibilities
- Under the supervision of a board registered sonographer, performs non-invasive cardiovascular procedures on patients of every age utilizing approved protocols and operates equipment and monitors function of all equipment.
- Properly inspects transducer ports and cords for damage prior to usage.
- Understands procedure for reporting equipment malfunctions.
- Properly cleans transducer after each exam.
- Evaluates scan for technical quality, prepares technological reports of findings in a timely fashion after each exam for the physician’s interpretation so that patient’s final report is not delayed.
- Actively pursue echo and/or vascular board registry status within 1 year of hire.
- Correlates other testing modalities with non-invasive testing for quality assurance.
- Participates in continuous quality improvement program and attends quality meetings.
- Obtains patient history and clinical data for correlation with procedure.
- Explains procedure, provides patient education, and positions patient.
- Assumes both physical and psychological needs of patients while in the non-invasive area.
- Practices universal precautions and aseptic technique as necessary.
- Provides timely and accurate documentation and maintains patient records and digital image storage.
- Assists with procedure scheduling.
- Initiates and participates in life support measures as necessary.
- Operates other equipment/devices as appropriate.
- Assists physician with imaging procedures.
- Maintain cleanliness in work area daily and stocks procedure rooms daily.
- Facilitates and organizes workload to provide excellent patient care by providing feedback, communication, and by keeping patient waiting times to the shortest possible time.
- Demonstrates courteous behavior through polite and respectful communication with all physicians, co-workers, patients, and visitors.
- Recognizes when others are in need of assistance and consistently offers help when own workload permits or locates someone who could provide the needed assistance.
- Promotes a professional image by adhering to the established dress code.
- Demonstrates cost effectiveness in the use of supplies and equipment as indicated by minimum wastage of supplies.
- Contribute to the time management of the department by being punctual to work and on assignments according to the hospital standards.
- Demonstrates the importance of wearing employee identification badge.
- Understands and adheres to departmental policies and procedures related to specific job function, acts as resource to other staff and new personnel.
- Ensures own health status as demonstrated by timely compliance with all hospital health and safety policies.
- Practices proper body mechanics.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and is aware of patient rights.
- Keeps management informed of any unusual concerns.
- Assists in transport of patients as needed.
Qualifications
- At minimum a High School Diploma or GED.
- Currently enrolled in a CAAHEP accredited cardiovascular sonography program which will allow the incumbent to be cardiac and/or vascular board registry eligible before or after program completion.
- It is expected that the incumbent will complete and graduate from the sonography program successfully.
- Needs to be obtain board registry within 1 year of sonography program graduation for Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS) and/or Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS), or Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS) and/or Registered Vascular Sonographer (RVS) registry certification from the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).
- Clinical experience or instruction in non-invasive cardiovascular imaging and experience in a non-invasive cardiovascular lab preferred.
- Ability to operate ultrasound equipment and produce quality images and store and retrieve digital images as required.
