Job Description

Schedule:

Part-time/ad-hoc position. Work schedule will vary based on Government interpreting requests. Assignments may occur during normal business hours, Monday through Friday, with occasional support for special events, meetings, trainings, interviews, and other scheduled activities. Interpreters must maintain availability to respond to assignments with advance notice and short-notice requests as required.

Summary:

The Certified ASL Interpreter will provide professional American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting services in support of Deaf and Hard of Hearing employees, applicants, and customers within a federal government environment. The position requires accurate and confidential interpretation during meetings, training sessions, interviews, events, and other official activities.

The interpreter will facilitate effective communication between ASL users and hearing individuals while maintaining professional standards, confidentiality, and compliance with the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct.

Requirements:
  • Active ASL interpreter certification or qualification from an approved organization, including:
    • RID NIC, NIC Advanced, NIC Master, CI, or CT certification; or
    • NAD Level III, IV, or V certification.
  • Professional experience providing ASL interpreting services.
  • Ability to interpret between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Ability to provide different interpreting modes based on consumer needs, including ASL, CASE, PSE, SEE, and voice interpreting.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Professional appearance, conduct, and reliability.
  • Ability to work independently in professional and government environments.
  • Ability to successfully complete required security screening, background investigation, and facility access requirements.
  • Ability to comply with Government security, privacy, and workplace requirements.
Duties:
  • Provide accurate ASL interpreting services for meetings, training sessions, interviews, briefings, and other government-related events.
  • Interpret spoken English into ASL and ASL into spoken English as required.
  • Support communication access for Deaf and Hard of Hearing employees, applicants, and customers.
  • Adapt interpreting methods based on individual consumer preferences and assignment requirements.
  • Maintain professional conduct and follow the RID Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Arrive on time and coordinate with the designated Government point of contact upon arrival.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all information encountered during assignments.
  • Support onsite interpreting assignments within the designated service area.
  • Participate in virtual interpreting assignments when authorized by the Government.
  • Coordinate with scheduling personnel regarding availability, assignment confirmation, cancellations, and changes.
  • Notify appropriate personnel if an assignment is completed early or if reassignment is required.
  • Maintain accurate records related to completed interpreting assignments.
