About This Position

Position Summary: Represents the pharmacy within the Information Technology department; provides resource expertise for planning additional pharmacy information technology projects; collaborates with medical and nursing staff on issues regarding pharmacy-related aspects of the hospital information system.

Responsibilities:

  • Interprets medication orders (ex: contraindications, drug-drug interactions, and drug-food interactions, allergies, and appropriateness of drug and dose) and transcribes computerized patient medication profiles.
  • Compounds and dispenses pharmaceuticals, including sterile, chemotherapy, and parenteral nutrition products.
  • Issues controlled substances to patient care areas and maintains records.
  • Completes pharmacokinetics consultations ordered during their shift, determining medication dosing.
  • Reviews/interprets culture and susceptibility data for antibiotics.
  • Reads, extracts, and interprets information from patient medical records.
  • Detects and reports suspected adverse drug reactions using the available electronic process.
  • Sustains the formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic substitution protocols, and promoting rational drug therapy selection.
  • Provides information and education to patients/families regarding medications.
  • Disaster Recovery and Pharmacy Continuity: assists the end-user department in creating procedures for pharmacy-related continuance during the event of a disaster and/or testing.
  • Provides pharmacy information systems orientation, in-service training and education in collaboration with the Pharmacy System Coordinator.
  • Primary responsibility, in collaboration with the Pharmacy System Coordinator, is for the setup and maintenance of information system medication dictionaries, including addition or deletions of medications, assignment of billing numbers, reimbursement codes and coordination with affected departments and modules.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Graduate of a School of Pharmacy (Pharm D or BS Pharm) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE).
  • Licensed with the State of Kansas Board of Pharmacy.

Preferred:

  • One to three years of prior pharmacy information technology experience.

Infection Control: Initial and Ongoing training in dealing with infection control. Trainings could include, but is not limited to, blood-borne pathogens, bodily fluids and bio-hazardous materials as applies to your daily work environment.

Patient Interaction: Periodic

HIPAA: This position will have access to the following Protected Health Information in order to carry out the duties related to their position at Hays Medical Center based on the following criteria:

Primary – required (routine) to do the job;

Secondary – required for the job, but mostly be exceptions; and

None – no approved access

Primary:

Patient Demographic Information (information used to identify a person): Name, Date of Birth, Address, Race, Marital Status, Religion.

Financial Information/Insurance (information related to insurance, billing and payment): Billing Information, Payer Name, Payer ID, Account Balances, Plan Elements Covered, Payment Information, Payment Rates.

Coding Information (clinical information that is in (alpha) numeric format): ICD-9 Codes, Rev Codes, CPT Codes.

Clinical Information (information that describes a patient’s health status): Diagnosis, Reports/Medical Notes, Test Results, Problem List, Procedures, History and Physical.
