The Environmental Health Coordinator inspects all food service establishments, investigates reports of sewage leaks, and inspects all public swimming pools. Educates the public and operators of consumer service establishments to prevent disease and improve sanitary conditions of the community. Uses on-site inspection and enforcement measures to assure compliance with health and sanitation regulations. Prevention of disease and protection of Environmental and Public Health through education, inspection, investigation, and enforcement of health and sanitation practices and regulations.
- Inspects all food sales and service establishments to educate operators on sanitation and hygienic practices. Assures compliance through enforcement measures. Issues permits, reviews plans, and conducts food schools.
- Composes, records, files, and maintains all computer and paper records of inspections, professional communications and court related actions.
- Responds to reports of pollution, sewage leaks, rodent and insect infestation, mosquito breeding, abandoned pools, obnoxious odors, and trash containment. Responds to safety and sanitation complaints in a timely manner.
- Inspects all public swimming pools and spas to educate operators in pool water hygiene and assure compliance through enforcement. Issue permits. Conducts pool schools.
- Enforces health ordinances through court action. Issues citations, builds case evidence, consults with prosecuting attorney, and testifies in court proceedings.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned, including public speaking engagements.
Required:
- Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or institution with at least 30 hours in Biological Sciences.
- Registration as a Sanitarian-in-Training with the State of Texas during the first six months of employment.
- Successful passage of Sanitarian registration examination within two years of employment and registration as a Sanitarian within two years of employment.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (must obtain TX driver’s license within 90 days).
OR
An equivalent combination of education, experience, certification and/or licenses sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
Preferred:
- Two years related experience.
- Bilingual/Spanish
- Ability to understand, interpret, apply, and provide defensible reasoning in application of City ordinances, regulations, and codes.
- Must be able to explain codes and regulations to the public in a courteous, concise, and tactful manner.
- Document case investigations using accurate written and photographic records so as to be legally defensible in court proceedings.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement, recognize existing or potential issues, and critically think through and recommend solutions that balance the health and safety of the community and adherence to the code.
- Ability to find the logical relationships among various observations as it relates to codes and regulations so that they all make sense together, as a whole.
