About This Position

If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to work as a full-time (40 hrs/wk) Peer Specialist for our Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team!


What You Will Be Doing

Working as a Peer Specialist with the Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Team you will:

  • Model a recovery-based lifestyle and share your personal story and experience to help people receiving services or experiencing mental illness achieve their own recovery.
  • Assist the team in providing comprehensive care for those receiving services.
  • Connect individuals served with community resources.
  • Assist with medication management.
  • Connect individuals served to services that support comprehensive care, including health, wellness, and recovery supports.

The individual in this position will be knowledgeable about and actively support 1) culturally competent, recovery based practices, 2) person centered planning as a shared decision making process with the individual, who defines his or her own life goals and is assisted in developing a unique path toward those goals and 3) a trauma informed culture to aid consumers in their recovery process.


What We Require

You will have a High School diploma or GED with at least one year relevant work experience; experience in a mental health setting or Community Mental Health is preferred.

You will have a knowledge of self-determination principles and person-centered planning process. Michigan Certified Peer Support Specialist designation is strongly preferred, the ability to obtain certification is required.

To be eligible for a Michigan Certified Peer Support Specialist designation, you must have the following:

  • A primary diagnosis of a mental health condition
  • Firsthand lived experience with a mental health condition that has caused substantial life disruption
  • Has been a recipient of public or private mental health treatment and/or services for at least 1 year with a substantial life disruption due to the mental health condition.

Basic computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, database management and e-mail and basic knowledge in the use of electronic office equipment, including copy and fax machines. This position involves travel throughout the Kalamazoo area and a valid Michigan driver’s license and reliable transportation is required.

Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:

Must be able to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations, including, but not limited to, visual and/or audiological appliances and devices to increase mobility.

Physical Efforts – Job demands include prolonged sitting and standing. Requires light lifting up to 25 pounds, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or bending. Requires coordination of hands and/or eye/hand/foot and ability to hear and communicate verbally.

Working Conditions – In office environment with noise from computers, copy machine, and telephones. Use of computer for periods in excess of 30 minutes at a time. May be exposed to bloodborne pathogens, infectious diseases, and parasites. May encounter community environments that include homes, schools, courts, and other community settings that may or may not be barrier-free. Travel throughout the Kalamazoo area may be required.
