Job Description

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming environment throughout Salem University's campus facilities. This position supports the University's daily operations by performing routine cleaning, sanitation, and general custodial services in academic buildings, administrative offices, common areas, restrooms, and other assigned campus spaces.

The Custodian plays an important role in maintaining the overall appearance and functionality of campus facilities while contributing to a positive experience for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

This position requires attention to detail, reliability, the ability to work independently, and a commitment to maintaining University standards for cleanliness, safety, and facility care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties listed below are representative of the responsibilities of this position. Additional duties may be assigned based on departmental or institutional needs.

General Cleaning & Custodial Services
  • Perform daily cleaning and custodial services in assigned campus buildings and facilities.

  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, scrub, and maintain floors, hallways, stairways, and other designated areas.

  • Clean and sanitize classrooms, administrative offices, conference rooms, lounges, and common areas.

  • Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces, including door handles, railings, desks, tables, and other frequently used areas.

  • Empty trash and recycling containers and transport waste to designated disposal locations.

  • Dust and clean furniture, fixtures, windowsills, and other accessible surfaces.

  • Clean interior glass, doors, mirrors, and other surfaces as assigned.

  • Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of entrances, lobbies, and public areas.

  • Follow established cleaning schedules and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.

Restroom Cleaning & Sanitation
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain restrooms throughout assigned campus facilities.

  • Sanitize toilets, sinks, countertops, partitions, fixtures, and other restroom surfaces.

  • Replenish restroom supplies, including soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and other necessary materials.

  • Monitor restroom conditions and respond to cleaning or supply needs.

  • Report plumbing concerns, damaged fixtures, leaks, and other maintenance issues.

  • Follow established sanitation and infection-prevention practices.

Floor Care & Facility Appearance
  • Maintain floors through sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and other appropriate cleaning methods.

  • Assist with periodic floor care, including stripping, waxing, buffing, and carpet cleaning when trained and assigned.

  • Identify and report flooring damage, spills, and potential slip or trip hazards.

  • Maintain assigned areas in a clean, organized, and professional condition.

  • Support seasonal or periodic deep-cleaning projects.

Campus Events & Special Cleaning Projects
  • Assist with cleaning and preparation of campus facilities before and after University events.

  • Support setup and breakdown of tables, chairs, and other equipment for meetings, ceremonies, athletic events, and special activities as assigned.

  • Perform additional cleaning associated with high-traffic events or increased campus activity.

  • Assist with classroom, office, and facility transitions when needed.

  • Support special cleaning projects during academic breaks, summer periods, and other scheduled maintenance windows.

Cleaning Supplies & Equipment
  • Properly use, maintain, and store custodial tools, cleaning supplies, and equipment.

  • Monitor cleaning supply levels and communicate replenishment needs to the appropriate supervisor.

  • Follow manufacturer instructions and University procedures when using cleaning chemicals and equipment.

  • Properly label, handle, and store cleaning products in accordance with applicable safety requirements.

  • Report damaged or malfunctioning custodial equipment.

  • Maintain custodial closets and storage areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.

  • Follow established procedures for the use of personal protective equipment.

Safety, Security & Maintenance Reporting
  • Identify and promptly report unsafe conditions, damaged property, maintenance concerns, or facility hazards.

  • Place appropriate warning signs or barriers when cleaning creates temporary slip or trip hazards.

  • Follow University safety procedures and applicable workplace safety requirements.

  • Report unusual activity, unsecured areas, or other security concerns to appropriate personnel.

  • Maintain appropriate security of assigned buildings and work areas.

  • Follow established procedures for handling bodily-fluid spills and other potentially hazardous materials, including escalation when specialized cleanup is required.

  • Use cleaning equipment and supplies in a manner that promotes personal safety and the safety of others.

Campus Support & Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintain a professional, courteous, and service-oriented approach when interacting with students, faculty, staff, and visitors.

  • Respond appropriately to custodial service requests and communicate concerns to the supervisor.

  • Coordinate with Facilities and Campus Operations personnel to support daily campus needs.

  • Maintain confidentiality and respect for University property and personal belongings.

  • Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and accountability in completing assigned work.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of basic cleaning, sanitation, and custodial practices.

  • Ability to safely operate standard custodial equipment and cleaning tools.

  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to understand and follow cleaning product labels, safety procedures, and equipment instructions.

  • Knowledge of appropriate handling and storage of cleaning supplies and chemicals.

  • Ability to recognize and report unsafe conditions or maintenance concerns.

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness.

  • Ability to manage assigned cleaning schedules and prioritize tasks.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with Facilities personnel and other University departments.

  • Strong reliability, punctuality, and work ethic.

  • Ability to maintain professionalism and discretion when working in occupied offices, classrooms, and other campus facilities.

  • Ability to perform physically demanding work throughout an assigned shift.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent relevant work experience may be considered.

  • Ability to perform routine custodial and cleaning responsibilities.

  • Ability to safely use cleaning products, supplies, and equipment following training.

  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Ability to work independently and maintain assigned cleaning schedules.

  • Ability to work assigned shifts, which may include evenings, weekends, or adjusted schedules based on campus needs.

  • Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, or commercial cleaning experience.

  • Experience working in an educational institution, healthcare facility, commercial building, or similar environment.

  • Experience operating floor-cleaning equipment, including buffers, scrubbers, and carpet-cleaning machines.

  • Knowledge of sanitation practices and safe cleaning chemical handling.

  • Experience supporting facility cleaning for special events or high-traffic environments.

  • Familiarity with workplace safety procedures and cleaning equipment maintenance.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods throughout the workday.

  • Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and repetitive movements.

  • Ability to lift and carry cleaning supplies, trash bags, and custodial equipment.

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation, and use assistance or equipment for heavier items.

  • Ability to push and pull custodial carts, trash containers, and cleaning equipment.

  • Ability to operate vacuums, floor-cleaning machines, and other custodial tools.

  • Ability to work in areas requiring stair climbing and movement between campus buildings.

  • Potential exposure to dust, cleaning chemicals, odors, bodily fluids, and other materials associated with custodial duties.

  • Ability to perform cleaning responsibilities in indoor and occasional outdoor environments.

Work Environment

This position works primarily on-site at Salem University's campus in Salem, West Virginia.

Work is performed in classrooms, administrative offices, restrooms, hallways, stairwells, common areas, event spaces, and other University facilities.

The position may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, odors, waste materials, and potentially hazardous substances. Appropriate training, equipment, and protective measures will be provided in accordance with applicable requirements.

Work schedules may include daytime, evening, weekend, or adjusted shifts depending on University operations, events, and facility needs.

Licenses, Certifications, and Employment Requirements

The successful candidate must:
