Job Description
The Director of Hospitalist Practice will oversee the day-to-day business operations of an inpatient medical group. Act as the primary liaison between clinical providers, hospital C-suite executives, and administrative staff. Key responsibilities include managing provider schedules, overseeing financial performance (P&L), ensuring credentialing and compliance, and driving quality patient care initiatives.
Performance expectations:
Operations & Logistics
- Scheduling: Design, optimize, and maintain clinical shift schedules well in advance to guarantee 24/7/365 floor coverage.
- Workflow Management: Collaborate with hospital departments (e.g., case management, nursing leadership, medical staff office) to remove operational barriers and ensure smooth daily rounding.
- Liaison: Serve as the central communication hub between hospital administration and the employed or contracted physician group.
Financial Management
- Payroll & Billing: Review and validate provider shifts, shift differentials, and productivity data for payroll processing.
- Budgeting: Participate in the creation and maintenance of site budgets, review Profit and Loss (P&L) statements, and ensure practice financial sustainability.
Human Resources & Team Management
- Onboarding & Orientation: Oversee the orientation process for new Hospitalists, locum tenens, and advanced practice providers (APPs), ensuring they are integrated into hospital-specific systems.
- Staff Development: Manage recruitment efforts, conduct performance reviews, and organize regular team meetings.
Credentialing & Compliance
- Privileging & Licensing: Ensure all clinical providers maintain active state licenses, hospital privileges, and payer enrollments prior to patient care.
- Compliance: Oversee documentation and billing compliance, ensuring clinicians meet mandatory training requirements
Qualifications:
Education/Skills
Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field. A Master's degree (MHA, MBA) is preferred.
Work Experience:
3 to 5 years of healthcare operations or medical practice management experience, with a specific background in inpatient/hospital medicine.
Skills:
Proficiency in Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, HR Information Systems (HRIS), intermediate Microsoft Office (especially Excel), and a deep understanding of medical billing and compliance.
Mental Demands:

Skills to analyze reports, payment systems, and statistical data as applicable. Ability to work collaboratively across the continuum of care with entities and disciplines.
