Responsible for adequacy and appropriateness of oral, enteral, and parenteral nutritional support of all patients on assigned units. Evaluates, assesses, instructs and monitors patients according to established standards of care. Assists in the development and implementation of nutrition education programs for hospital staff or the community as needed.
Duties & Responsibilities
- As appropriate, completely assesses the nutritional status of patient through use of physical, biochemical, and socioeconomic indices and present clinical status.
- Upon determined need, provides nutrition education to inpatients, family, and/or caregiver on prescribed diet.
- A summary of the intervention is documented in the computerized medical record.
- Performs follow-up review of diet information with patient/caregiver as needed.
- May be required to instruct outpatients occasionally.
- As appropriate, analyzes nutrient intake of patients through calorie count procedure.
- Includes nutritional assessment upon initiation of calorie count.
- Documents results of protein and calorie intake in the computerized medical record.
- Monitors enteral or parenteral nutritional support and conducts an initial assessment as needed.
- Contacts physician regarding individual patient cases requiring further discussion of nutritional care.
- Keeps abreast of current advances in nutritional research theory, and practice by review of the literature and participation in seminars and workshops.
- Serves as a departmental and hospital representative to provide nutritional expertise at employee and community functions as requested.
- Develops, evaluates and revises nutrition education literature and teaching tools including written pamphlets, brochures, and visual aids.
- Serves as preceptor for students and interns that may rotate through the department for observation or practical experience.
- Demonstrates competence to provide developmentally appropriate care/treatment for the following patient population: Infant (Birth to 1 year); Child (1 year through 12 years); Adolescent (13 through 17 years); Adult (18 years to 65 years); Geriatric (over 65 years).
- Refers routine requests for obtaining food preferences to Dietary Assistants, reviewing and assisting as needed.
- Serves as clinical nutrition representative on case management teams, patient care conferences, and CQI teams as requested.
- Knowledgeable in basic computer skills and maintains ability to perform basic functions within the CBORD Diet Office system.
- Participates in evaluation/revision of the Nutrition Care Manual by the Clinical Dietetics Staff.
- Participates in departmental revision of patient menus.
- Manages flex style of work schedule to most efficiently complete duties and responsibilities of assigned areas.
- Performs other duties as requested by manager.
- Maintains an optimistic, professional, career-oriented demeanor (positive role model) as a leader within AnMed.
- Exemplifies excellent customer relations toward patients, visitors, staff, and coworkers and conforms themselves to the Guest Relations Policy as well as the general hospital rules.
Qualifications
- Completion of internship or qualifying experience previously approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).
- Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN), registered through written exam administered by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
- Registry eligible applicants will be considered with stipulation of becoming registered within six months from date of hire.
- Current Licensure status with the Board of Dietetics for the State of South Carolina, or eligible to sit for exam and receive such licensure within six months of the date of hire.
- Innovative, self-motivated individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s Degree.
- Experience in an acute care medical facility with responsibilities for assessing and teaching of normal and modified nutrition.
