Position Summary:
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) provides comprehensive primary care services to individuals and families across the lifespan. Responsibilities include assessing, diagnosing, treating, and managing acute and chronic medical conditions within the APRN scope of practice. The APRN delivers patient-centered care through health assessments, treatment planning, diagnostic interpretation, medication management, preventive care, and patient education.
This role requires strong clinical judgment, independent decision-making, effective communication, and collaboration with interdisciplinary healthcare teams. The APRN is expected to maintain current clinical knowledge and comply with all applicable healthcare regulations and organizational standards.
Responsibilities:
- Practice within the scope of practice as defined by Florida law, national certification standards, and organizational clinical protocols.
- Conduct comprehensive health assessments, including history-taking, physical examinations, and development of differential diagnoses.
- Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests and procedures to assess patient conditions.
- Develop, implement, and manage personalized care plans for patients, including preventive care, treatment, and follow-up.
- Prescribe medications, therapies, and lifestyle modifications, ensuring proper documentation and patient education on their use.
- Provide management of acute and chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, and common infections.
- Educate patients and families on disease prevention, health promotion, and self-management techniques for chronic conditions.
- Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care.
- Maintain up-to-date and comprehensive records for all patients in accordance with legal, regulatory, and organizational standards.
- Ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior healthcare staff, such as nurses or medical students.
- Lead or contribute to quality improvement initiatives, patient care protocols, and educational programs within the practice.
- Adhere to established clinical protocols, safety procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and continuing education to maintain licensure and certifications.
- Complete clinical documentation, order entry, and encounter closure within organizational timeframes and quality standards.
- Contribute to audits, compliance checks, and internal reviews to ensure the highest quality of care and patient safety standards.
- Coordinate patient follow-up care, referrals, interdisciplinary communication, and related documentation to support continuity of care.
- Maintain all required licensure, certifications and continuing education requirements in accordance with state and national standards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to assess, diagnose, and treat a broad range of medical conditions across the lifespan.
- Strong critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills, including the ability to assess complex patient conditions and develop appropriate treatment plans.
- Competence in performing physical examinations and ordering/interpretation of diagnostic tests.
- Proficiency in developing comprehensive care plans tailored to individual patient needs.
- Capability to manage complex cases and handle medical emergencies as needed.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to establish trust and rapport with patients.
- Sensitivity to cultural, socioeconomic, and psychological factors that affect patient care.
- Ability to educate patients and their families on treatment plans, prevention, and health promotion.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team, including physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
- Proficiency in using medical instruments, diagnostic tools, and technology, including inserting IVs, taking blood samples, and performing physical examinations.
- Strong communication skills for collaboration and patient handoffs.
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple patient cases efficiently within a busy clinical environment.
- Skilled in documentation and maintaining accurate patient records.
- Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and medical software for patient management.
- Knowledge of healthcare regulations, patient privacy laws, and ethical standards in clinical practice.
- Ability to navigate complex ethical dilemmas in patient care.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with advancements in medical research, clinical guidelines, and healthcare technologies.
- Ability to mentor and provide guidance to other healthcare providers or students.
- Strong leadership skills for managing patient care and contributing to healthcare improvement initiatives.
- The ability to handle high-stress situations, manage emotionally challenging patient scenarios, and maintain focus and professionalism throughout long shifts.
- Ability to make quick, sound decisions under pressure while providing compassionate care.
- Meet organizational standards related to productivity, quality outcomes, and patient access while maintaining high standards of patient care.
- Adhere to infection prevention standards, workplace safety protocols, and universal precautions.
- Knowledge of Florida prescribing regulations, controlled substance protocols, and applicable state and federal healthcare laws.
- Regular and predictable onsite attendance.
Education/Experience:
- Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited program required.
- Minimum of 2-3 years of clinical experience as a registered nurse (RN), with at least 1-2 years in a primary care or family practice setting preferred.
- Completion of an APRN program with a focus on general practice or family care required.
- Current, active state licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)required.
- National Certification in a relevant APRN role, such as Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) from a recognized certifying body (e.g., AANP or ANCC).
- Current DEA registration or ability to obtain prior to hire required.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)required.
- Experience in electronic health record (eCW) systems, with proficiency in documentation and patient management software preferred.
- Experience diagnosing and managing acute and chronic medical conditions in a primary care setting preferred.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent standing and walking for extended periods during patient examinations, consultations, and rounds.
- Ability to move efficiently between patient rooms, exam areas, and other facilities within the healthcare setting.
- Ability to lift and carry medical equipment, supplies, and occasionally assist patients with mobility, including transferring patients from beds or examination tables.
- Lifting or assisting with patients weighing up to 50 pounds or more, depending on the patient population and setting.
- Ability to write and type for documentation and communication purposes.
- Bending, Stooping, and Reaching: Frequent bending and stooping when examining patients, accessing equipment, or retrieving supplies.
- Reaching overhead or at ground level to stock supplies, adjust equipment, or interact with patients
- Good visual acuity to interpret diagnostic tests, observe patients, and administer medications accurately.
- Ability to hear and comprehend patient concerns, heartbeats, lung sounds, and other critical auditory information during assessments.
