Medical Technologist - Bacteriology

Job Summary

As a Medical Technologist, you will perform a variety of routine and specialized diagnostic laboratory tests on environmental, blood, and body fluid specimens as prescribed by physicians and healthcare providers within the technical areas of Microbiology, Serology, and Urinalysis. This role is responsible for processing and analyzing specimens submitted for clinical testing, performing required laboratory procedures, reporting results to appropriate personnel, and maintaining the instrumentation utilized to support accurate and timely patient care.

Minimum Qualifications Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology, Biology, Basic Sciences, or Medical Laboratory Science required.
  • Graduate of an approved program in Medical Laboratory Science required.
  • Candidates who were previously qualified, or could have qualified, as a technologist under the March 14, 1990 rules (Medicare/CLIA '67) on or before February 28, 1992, will also be considered.
  • In lieu of education, must be ASCP certified
Experience
  • Minimum of one year of experience in all areas of the Laboratory or Microbiology Department preferred.
  • New graduates of an accredited Medical Technology program are considered to have one year of laboratory experience in all areas of the Laboratory.
Licensure and/or Certification
  • ASCP certification preferred.
Skills and Knowledge
  • Ability to work independently and make decisions based on established policies, protocols, procedures, and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of basic laboratory methods and microbiology principles.
  • Working knowledge of automated and manual laboratory equipment.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform venipuncture, safely handle specimens, calibrate equipment, and perform related laboratory procedures.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage a variety of variables in situations where limited standardization may exist.
  • Good understanding of quality control principles and laboratory best practices.
  • Ability to interpret and follow instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and communicate effectively with patients, physicians, outside agencies, vendors, and fellow staff members.
  • Computer proficiency required.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information and protect patient privacy.
