Description:

The Village of Mount Prospect, Illinois, population 56,852 is located along Metra’s Union Pacific Northwest Line, 23 miles from downtown Chicago and five miles north of O’Hare International Airport. The Village’s Police Department is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Community Service Officer. Providing exceptional public support and administrative assistance within a fast-paced law enforcement environment is a top priority. Serve as a key point of contact for community members by delivering courteous, professional, and responsive customer service while assisting with non-emergency public safety matters. Skilled in conflict resolution, multitasking, and maintaining composure under pressure while supporting police operations and ensuring positive community relations.

Under the general direction of the Patrol Shift Supervisor, the successful candidate will be able to communicate effectively, make responsible decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures, and demonstrate the highest levels of integrity in the conduct of their work.

Duties Include:

  • Deliver high-quality customer service by assisting citizens in person and over the phone with non-emergency inquiries, reports, directions, and public safety concerns
  • Provide front-desk support by greeting visitors, processing complaints, routing inquiries, and maintaining accurate departmental records and documentation
  • Respond to service-related calls including vehicle lockouts, animal control complaints, parking enforcement, abandoned vehicle investigations, and public nuisance issues
  • Support patrol operations by assisting officers at accident scenes, fire responses, traffic incidents, and community safety events
  • Direct traffic and managed crowd control to ensure public safety during emergencies, utility work, and special events
  • Monitor detainees and security alarm systems in accordance with departmental procedures and safety standards
  • Issue citations and enforced local ordinances related to parking, bicycle regulations, and municipal code compliance
  • Maintain communication via police radio systems, ensuring prompt and accurate response to operational instructions
  • Process reports, maintained activity logs, and entered data accurately into departmental systems
  • Assist with records management, supply inventory, equipment transport, and departmental logistics coordination
  • Support community outreach initiatives to strengthen positive relationships between law enforcement and residents
  • Demonstrate professionalism, discretion, and strong interpersonal skills when handling sensitive situations and public interactions
Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • One year’s experience in tasks involving public contact, customer service, or related work or an equivalent combination of training and experience preferred
  • Excellent public service skills.
  • Bilingual skills are a plus.
  • Must have a valid Illinois driver’s license.

Compensation and Hours

This position is FLSA non-exempt. This is a full-time, 40 hour per week position with an excellent benefits package, including health and life insurance, IMRF pension, 457 retirement plan, vacation time, personal time, paid holidays, and sick days. The starting salary range for this position is $62,176-$74,612 when annualized, depending on qualifications. A complete job description is available by clicking here .

This position requires shift work, most likely from 3pm-11pm or overnight from 11pm-7am, with set days off and ability to work on holidays. Consistent and regular attendance is essential for successfully completing the duties of this position.
