The Extrusion Technician is responsible for setting up, operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining polymer extrusion processes used to manufacture precision medical tubing. This position requires strong hands-on mechanical and technical skills, attention to detail, and a thorough understanding of extrusion processing and medical device manufacturing requirements. The technician works closely with Production, Engineering, Quality, and R&D to ensure extrusion processes consistently produce tubing that meets dimensional, visual, and performance requirements. The position supports both production and development activities and is expected to troubleshoot process issues, optimize extrusion parameters, and maintain accurate documentation and material traceability.
Job Responsibilities
· Set up and operate polymer extrusion lines used to manufacture medical-grade tubing.
· Perform line setup, startup, shutdown, changeover, and teardown activities.
· Install and adjust extrusion tooling, dies, tips, sizing equipment, pullers, and other downstream equipment.
· Monitor extrusion processes and make adjustments to maintain tubing dimensions and product quality.
· Troubleshoot extrusion equipment and process conditions to identify and correct issues.
· Work with Engineering and R&D to develop and optimize extrusion processes for new and existing products.
· Produce prototype, development, qualification, and production tubing according to established specifications.
· Perform in-process inspections and measurements to verify tubing meets dimensional and visual requirements.
· Maintain accurate production records, process documentation, and lot traceability.
· Properly identify, handle, and stage raw materials to prevent contamination and ensure material traceability.
· Perform routine cleaning, preventative maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of extrusion equipment.
· Identify equipment problems and coordinate repairs with Maintenance or Engineering when necessary.
· Follow all applicable SOPs, work instructions, safety procedures, and quality system requirements.
· Maintain a clean, organized, and controlled manufacturing environment.
· Support process improvement initiatives focused on quality, scrap reduction, throughput, and process consistency.
· Communicate production status, process issues, and technical concerns to supervisors and cross-functional team members.
· Train and assist less-experienced technicians and operators as technical proficiency is developed.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:· High School diploma or equivalent.
· 2+ years’ experience with polymer extrusion.
· Experience working in a manufacturing environment.
· Mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills.
· Ability to read and follow procedures, work instructions, drawings, and specifications.
· Strong attention to detail.
· Good verbal and written communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
