This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Commercial Underwriting Specialist, Construction based in Canada.
As a Commercial Underwriting Specialist, you will manage and service increasingly complex construction risks while balancing sound underwriting judgment with strong client relationships.
You’ll evaluate and negotiate renewal rates, assess risk exposures, and develop tailored insurance solutions within established guidelines.
The role offers direct exposure to a broad broker network and requires proactive communication across email, phone, and in-person meetings.
You’ll contribute to business objectives while maintaining high standards for data quality and service levels.
As a senior member of the team, you’ll also coach and mentor junior underwriters and share your expertise.
You’ll work in a collaborative environment with opportunities to expand your knowledge and appetite for complex commercial risks.

- Underwrite and service increasingly complex commercial construction accounts in line with established underwriting guidelines and business objectives.
- Execute renewal rates, evaluate risk, and negotiate appropriate pricing based on account characteristics and market conditions.
- Develop practical, solutions-oriented approaches to complex underwriting needs while maintaining appropriate risk discipline.
- Build and maintain strong, professional relationships with brokers and customers through responsive and proactive communication.
- Work closely with the broker network to understand client needs and develop customized insurance solutions.
- Maintain national standards for data quality and service level agreements across assigned accounts.
- Participate in broker meetings, including regular in-person interactions, to strengthen relationships and support business development.
- Coach and mentor junior underwriters, sharing technical knowledge and helping strengthen the team's underwriting capabilities.
- Collaborate with experienced underwriters and colleagues to continuously develop expertise in complex commercial risks.
- 5+ years of commercial underwriting experience, with specific experience in construction risks.
- Completed or actively pursuing a CIP or FCIP designation; additional insurance qualifications are an asset.
- Strong knowledge of commercial underwriting principles, including renewal pricing, risk evaluation, negotiation, and account servicing.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective professional relationships with brokers and/or customers.
- Strong sales, negotiation, communication, and customer service capabilities.
- Solutions-oriented mindset with sound judgment and the ability to work effectively with increasingly complex accounts.
- Strong interpersonal skills and confidence communicating through email, phone, and in-person meetings.
- Experience coaching or mentoring junior colleagues is highly valued.
