Position Summary
The Fire Alarm Installation Technician installs, terminates, programs, and tests fire alarm and life safety systems on new construction and large retrofit projects under Division 28 scopes. Work is performed as part of an installation crew under a Project Manager or Field Supervisor, from construction documents, in accordance with NFPA 72, the NEC, local AHJ requirements, and manufacturer specifications.
This is a project-based, production-focused role emphasizing clean, code-compliant installation at scale — from rough-in through testing, final acceptance, and turnover.
Key Responsibilities
Install, mount, and terminate fire alarm devices at project scale: initiating devices, notification appliances, control and monitor modules, and annunciators, per plans and device schedules.
Install and terminate fire alarm cabling and pathways per NFPA 72, NEC, and project specifications.
Install, wire, and program fire alarm control panels (FACPs), power supplies, and network/node equipment.
Coordinate rough-in with the electrical prime, GC, and other trades to meet the construction schedule.
Perform device addressing, point-to-point testing, and system programming.
Support pre-tests and final acceptance testing with the AHJ and fire marshal.
Read and work from riser diagrams, floor plans, sequences of operation, and device schedules.
Maintain accurate red-lines and as-built documentation throughout the project.
Complete project test records and closeout documentation.
Meet installation quality and production targets set by the PM/Field Supervisor.
Follow all company safety policies and OSHA requirements at all times.
Qualifications & Skills
Required
3+ years of fire alarm installation experience on commercial construction projects.
Working knowledge of NFPA 72 and the NEC.
Ability to read and interpret riser diagrams, floor plans, and device schedules.
Experience installing, terminating, and rough-in of addressable and conventional systems.
Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
Ability to meet the physical requirements of the role.
Preferred
NICET Level I or II certification in Fire Alarm Systems.
Hands-on experience with one or more major platforms (e.g., Notifier, Silent Knight, EST/Edwards, Simplex, Fire-Lite, Gamewell/Honeywell).
Experience with ERCES / BDA (in-building public safety) or DAS.
OSHA 10/30 and manufacturer factory training/certifications.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This is a field-based role performed primarily at active construction jobsites and end-user facilities, with local/regional travel between sites. The employee must be able to walk construction sites and uneven terrain; climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, and aerial/scissor lifts; work in mechanical/electrical rooms, ceilings, and confined spaces; and stand, bend, kneel, reach, and lift up to 50 pounds regularly. Work is performed with appropriate PPE. Must be able to detect, determine, distinguish, inspect, assess, and adjust focus, and distinguish colors for cable and conductor identification.
