This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Counsel, Cards Product based in the United States.

This role provides strategic legal guidance at the intersection of technology, financial products, and business growth, supporting the evolution of a fast-growing payments platform.
You will partner closely with product, finance, risk, sales, and engineering teams to launch innovative solutions while ensuring regulatory compliance and commercial success.
The position offers the opportunity to shape product strategy, advise on complex fintech matters, and become a trusted legal partner to business leaders.
You will work on emerging payment technologies, develop practical solutions to regulatory challenges, and help teams move quickly with confidence.

Accountabilities:

The Senior Counsel, Cards Product will serve as a key legal advisor supporting the development and growth of financial products, balancing risk management with innovation and business enablement.

  • Provide strategic legal counsel to product teams developing and launching new card and payment-related features.
  • Advise on fintech, payments, and financial services matters, translating complex regulations into practical guidance for product managers, engineers, and business stakeholders.
  • Negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements, including customer agreements, confidentiality agreements, issuer processor contracts, and financing-related arrangements.
  • Support sales teams by creating legal processes, training materials, and frameworks that improve efficiency and accelerate deal cycles.
  • Review and help develop marketing materials to ensure communications are compelling, accurate, and compliant.
  • Partner with finance and risk teams to identify, prevent, and mitigate financial risks, including fraud prevention and loss management.
  • Collaborate with legal colleagues across privacy, regulatory affairs, intellectual property, and product counseling on complex business initiatives.
  • Monitor industry and regulatory developments to anticipate challenges and provide proactive guidance.
  • Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders and become a trusted advisor for product and business teams.
  • Help establish scalable legal processes that support continued product growth and operational excellence.
Requirements:

The ideal candidate is a commercially focused attorney with strong fintech expertise, excellent judgment, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced product environment.

  • Licensed attorney in the United States with 6+ years of legal experience.
  • Significant in-house legal experience, combined with strong foundational training at a law firm.
  • Experience advising on emerging fintech products, particularly in commercial payments and financial services (excluding cryptocurrency).
  • Strong understanding of U.S. financial regulations and the ability to explain compliance requirements in practical terms to technical and business teams.
  • Experience negotiating complex commercial agreements and managing contractual risk.
  • Ability to make independent decisions in situations involving regulatory uncertainty or evolving business needs.
  • Strong business orientation with the ability to enable growth while knowing when to challenge decisions and mitigate risk.
  • Collaborative, humble, and low-ego approach with a commitment to empowering colleagues.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Interest in leveraging AI-driven tools and adopting an AI-first approach to improving legal processes.
Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation based on location, experience, education, certifications, and other relevant factors.
  • Estimated annual base salary ranges:
    • San Francisco, California: $175,000–$241,000 USD.
    • Major U.S. metropolitan areas, including Los Angeles, San Diego, New York City, Seattle, and Washington D.C.: $153,000–$210,000 USD.
    • Other U.S. locations: $153,000–$210,000 USD.
  • Potential eligibility for additional compensation, including restricted stock units for certain roles.
