Principal Engineer, Grid Engineering and Interconnection

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal Engineer, Grid Engineering and Interconnection based in the United States.

This is a senior technical and leadership role focused on strengthening grid reliability, enabling renewable integration, and advancing modern transmission planning.
You will lead a team of transmission planning and interconnection engineers while remaining directly involved in complex, high-impact power system studies.
The role combines deep engineering expertise with client engagement, project leadership, and business development.
You’ll work with utilities, independent power producers, and system operators to deliver analyses that influence major infrastructure and reliability decisions.
Your expertise will span power flow, voltage and transient stability, short-circuit analysis, interconnection, congestion, and economic studies.
You’ll also help develop engineering talent, maintain exceptional technical standards, and translate complex findings for both technical and executive audiences.

Accountabilities
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of transmission planning and interconnection study engineers while maintaining hands-on involvement in technical work.
  • Own client relationships and oversee the successful delivery of interconnection, stability, reliability, and transmission planning studies.
  • Review and ensure the technical quality of power flow, voltage stability, transient stability, and short-circuit analyses.
  • Conduct and oversee studies involving generator and load interconnections, transmission planning, congestion analysis, economic assessments, and cluster feasibility.
  • Prepare, review, and approve technical reports and ensure deliverables meet client requirements for reliability, regulatory compliance, quality, and accuracy.
  • Manage project scope, staffing, budgets, costs, and schedules across multiple concurrent client engagements.
  • Provide technical leadership on complex or high-impact power system studies and help resolve challenging engineering issues.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across different regions and disciplines to scale engineering capacity and maintain consistent delivery standards.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with utilities, independent power producers, and independent system operators.
  • Translate complex technical analyses and recommendations into clear, compelling communications for technical stakeholders and executive audiences.
  • Contribute to business development activities by shaping proposals, defining project scope, estimating resources, and identifying new client opportunities.
  • Support the continued development of engineering methodologies, technical capabilities, and industry knowledge within the team.
  • Ensure work reflects applicable reliability standards, interconnection requirements, and industry best practices.
Requirements
  • 10+ years of professional experience in power systems analysis, including at least 3 years leading engineers, projects, or client engagements.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering required; a Master’s or Ph.D. in Power Systems Engineering is advantageous.
  • Deep proficiency with PSS/E for load-flow and transient stability analysis and ASPEN for short-circuit analysis.
  • Experience with at least one additional power system planning or analysis platform, such as PSLF, TARA, PSCAD, or DSA Tools.
  • Proven experience leading stability studies, congestion analysis, cost modeling, transmission planning, or cluster feasibility studies across one or more ISOs.
  • Experience working across multiple ISOs, such as ERCOT, MISO, CAISO, PJM, NYISO, ISO-NE, or SPP, is highly valued.
  • Strong understanding of synchronous generators, motors, power-electronic inverters, wind turbines, solar PV systems, and battery energy storage systems.
  • Working knowledge of transmission reliability standards, interconnection processes, substation layouts, and protection and control systems.
  • Previous consulting or client-facing power systems experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage client relationships and deliver technically rigorous projects on time and within budget.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop engineers while remaining actively engaged in technical analysis.
  • Strong judgment and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions around technical methods, project scope, priorities, and schedules.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex engineering concepts to both technical and executive audiences.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to balance client delivery, team development, technical quality, and business priorities.
  • Experience contributing to open-source tools or publishing technical content related to transmission planning is a plus.
  • Must be authorized to work for any employer in the United States or Canada; employment visa or LMIA sponsorship is not available.
