Laborer - Public WorksDESCRIPTION: Under direction, performs various types of laboring work, routine manual work; may drive a truck inconnection with laboring work on occasion; loading, lifting and moving supplies; does related work as required.NOTE: The examples of work for this title are for illustrative purposes only. Hours of operation vary by department and are set by contract.Overtime schedules vary with weather and special events. Must be willing to work overtime when directed.RESPONSIBILITIES:Loads, Lifts, and moves supplies, furniture, and equipmentLoads debris into truck for removal; sorts, piles and cleans salvageable brickDigs trenches, does manual gradingCollects rubbish and other refuseCuts grass, mows lawns, trims hedges, waters lawns and flowersLoads and unloads trucksShovels snowShovels gravel and sand, helps in mixing cement and mortar, helps in the placing of forms used in concrete workCleans up underbrush, foliage, vines and weeds, helps cut down trees, digs out stumps of trees, digs out and destroyspoisonous vines, weeds, and undergrowthHelps clean sludge beds, sweeps streets, cleans sewersOccasionally or incidentally drives trucksCollects rubbish and other refuseLifts filled refuse cans to truck, and empties can into truckRe-deposits cans at the curbOperates mechanisms at the rear of trucksREQUIREMENTS:Must possess and maintain a valid New Jersey Driver's License - CDL License is preferred. Must be able to obtain a CDL within 6 months of employment.Must be available to work for prolonged periods and/or overtime during emergencies such as snowstorms and other weather-related events and remain on the job until all repairs have been made.KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:Ability to independently lift objects up to 50 poundsStrong verbal and written communication skillsKnowledge of standard methods, occupational hazards, and safety precautionsAbility to perform manual tasks individually and as part of a teamMust work well with other co-workersNeed to have a professional demeanor when addressing residents and the publicAbility to perform routine manual workAble to read, write and understand English sufficiently to perform duties and simple mathematical calculations
