Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Public Works Director, Supervisor, and Assistant Supervisor, this position performs routine work involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, storm sewers, and public facilities. The position requires operating trucks and other maintenance and construction equipment.
Job Responsibilities
Role Specific:
- Constructs and maintains catch basins, manholes, storm sewers, headwalls, curbs,bituminous, macadam, pavement, and stone pavements.
- Performs work involved in seal coating, sweeping streets, loading and unloadingmaterials, such as sand, salts, and plowing streets during inclement weather (wintersnow)
- Does cold-patching: installs, paints, and maintains street and road signs.
- Involved in cutting brush and mowing grass, operates, checks services, and performsminor maintenance to trucks, tractors, road graders, compressors, pumps, mowers, andother street and road equipment
General
- Attend required safety training sessions
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Required
- Experience in manual work
- Ability to read and follow written instructions
- Some knowledge of the proper procedures used in making routine repairs to public worksfacilities and skillful use of tools and equipment
- Ability to print and draw letters, numbers, words, characters, and symbols which arelegible and understood.
- Ability to see clearly, read, and comprehend letters, numbers, words, characters, orsymbols, both large and small, as well as identify colors
- Ability to use small hand tools that require the use of hands, wrists, and fingers
- Ability to learn simple to complex tasks and remember how to complete tasks withoutassistance once trained.
- Ability to operate motor vehicles (i.e., pickup trucks, vans, tractors, etc.) and load orunload vehicles with objects
- Proven level of dependability
- Ability to work independently and as part of a crew as needed
- Ability to speak English and hear & understand conversations in various tones of voice,accents, or pace.
Preferred
- At least one (1) year of experience in the construction/maintenance and repairs of streets,storm sewers, or public works facilities, or similar heavy construction or maintenancework.
- 3 or more documented years of work experience in a Public Works Department
- Tree worker skills.
- Ability to write short reports.
- Familiarity with computer use
Education, Certifications, and Licenses
Required
- Minimum education of a High School diploma, GED, or equivalent required
- Valid NJ driver's license
Preferred
- Class A CDL License with air brake endorsement
- Ability to obtain a New Jersey Class A CDL license by passing both the written and roadtest within the first year of employment
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essentialfunctions of this position.
- Must be physically capable of working outside in all weather conditions and on allterrains
- Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions
- Ability to see and work at night in dimly lit conditions as necessary, during inclementweather.
- Occasionally working near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places
- Ability to work at levels higher than ten feet.
- Use of senses, which include sight, smell, hearing, and touch, as aids in the evaluationand troubleshooting of malfunctioning equipment.
- Ability to work in undesirable conditions, including small enclosed or partially enclosedareas, dust, dirt, fumes, odors, noise, wetness, and humidity.
- Ability to walk, stand, and sit for periods longer than 30 minutes but not to exceed 8hours consecutively.
- Ability to stand in a stationary position for more than 30 minutes at a time and walkcontinuously for more than 10 minutes at a time throughout the working day.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull items which weigh up to 50 pounds over uneventerrain, up/down stairs, or ladders.
- Ability to carry items for a distance that ranges from 10 feet to no more than 300 yards
- Ability to lift and/or carry items that are considered awkward to grasp or hold on to
- Ability to lift items weighing 1 to 30 pounds for a period of less than 10 minutes, withoutputting the item down.
- Ability to stay in a bending, kneeling, or squatting position for periods less than 10minutes.
- Ability to go from a standing or sitting position to a bending, kneeling, or squattingposition, or vice versa, periodically.
- Ability to move back and forth and sideways while in a bending, kneeling, or squattingposition.

- Normal business hours are 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, Monday through Friday - business hoursmay change seasonally
- Ability to work regularly scheduled and overtime hours
