Position Overview:
The Safety Coordinator supports the EHS Manager in implementing and maintaining safety and environmental programs at the mill. This role conducts inspections, assists incident investigation and corrective actions, coordinates training and new-hire safety onboarding, maintains safety records and software, and helps drive a proactive safety culture with supervisors and employees.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the EHS Manager in development, implementation, and maintenance of safety and environmental policies, procedures, and programs.
- Conduct routine safety inspections and audits to identify hazards and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements; escalate serious hazards immediately to the EHS Manager and supervision.
- Assist in investigation of accidents, incidents, and near misses; contribute to corrective and preventive actions under the EHS Manager.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation related to safety and environmental activities, including incident reports, training records, audits, and permits.
- Assist with coordination of safety training programs and initiatives for employees at all levels.
- Assist with new-hire safety onboarding (and contractor safety orientation as directed).
- Monitor and track compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations and help prepare regulatory reports and submissions as directed by the EHS Manager.
- Participate in and help coordinate safety committee meetings and toolbox talks as directed.
- Collaborate with other Rex safety team members to identify and implement continuous improvement in safety and environmental performance.
- Assist with annual review of written safety programs.
- Stay informed about emerging trends, best practices, and regulatory changes in safety and environmental management.
- Maintain safety software systems such as EAM, Brady, and SafetyAmp.
- Administer post-accident, for-cause, random, and new-hire drug screens.
- Conduct regular safety walk-throughs on the assigned shift; address PPE and basic work-rule compliance; help maintain plant safety signage (bilingual if needed).
Qualifications:
- Previous EHS-related experience preferred (asset but not required).
- Knowledge of applicable safety and environmental regulations, standards, and best practices helpful.
- Strong organization and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent communication skills; able to work with employees at all levels and on the mill floor.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Willingness to learn and adapt; commitment to promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
- High school diploma or GED required; related degree preferred.
- OSHA 30 within the first year.
- Able to work the assigned shift, including 2nd shift / nights as operational need.
- Able to work in an industrial mill environment with required PPE.
