Coordinator, Conservation Biology in Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia at The Nature Conservancy of Canada

Position Summary

The Nature Conservancy of Canada is seeking a candidate with multiple skill sets to fill a 13-month position within Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia (NS) Conservation Biologist role is primarily to support the NS Program by coordinating and leading land stewardship activities, field research, and data management related to NCC nature reserves. The incumbent will work independently and with NCC staff, partners and volunteers to implement stewardship actions. They will work closely and cooperatively with the NS Stewardship Manager and will directly supervise a small team of interns during the fieldwork season. The role involves a mix of technical fieldwork and operational / administrative duties.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Directly support the management of NCC’s nature reserves in NS;
• Implement priority on-the-ground stewardship actions (e.g., installing signage, remove garbage, invasives management, maintaining trails, etc.);
• Hire, train, and supervise a team of summer interns in field and office activities;
• Complete monitoring of Nova Scotia NCC conserved lands and conservation easements within diverse ecosystems across Nova Scotia (forests, wetlands, coastal);
• Prepare baseline reports and monitoring reports for NCC properties including field data collection, data entry and ongoing organization of information;
• Manage stewardship projects including habitat restoration work, Species at Risk monitoring, trail building and maintenance etc., and enter data into NCC’s Land Information System database;
• Manage the NS mapping and GIS files and prepare stewardship maps;
• Assist with the coordination and delivery of volunteer events and other outreach and stewardship volunteer activities;
• Plan and coordinate a six-month long fieldwork plan and work schedule, and provide input on improving field protocols and data collection;
• Collaborate with partners (e.g., government, NGO, Indigenous communities, local volunteer groups, third party contractors) to achieve mutual conservation goals;
• Assist the NS Stewardship Manager with ongoing stewardship activities as needed.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

• Graduate with a biology, forestry, or environmental studies degree and two years professional experience;
• Demonstrated excellent flora and fauna identification skills for Nova Scotia, and the ability to key out unknown species, as well as knowledge of ecosystem classification;
• Experience working outdoors in various terrain including participation in weekly fieldwork trips throughout the summer involving multi-day overnight camping, long workdays, occasional weekends, and working in challenging weather conditions
• Navigation experience and skills using GPS or other navigation tech;
• Excellent interpersonal skills including experience supervising staff, collaborating with colleagues, and experience in easily communicating with a wide range of people in public and private sectors;
• Ability to work independently, be self-motivated, and display superior time management skills, attention to detail, as well as the ability to meet deadlines;
• Experience with Geographic Information Systems and working knowledge of ArcGIS Pro and Field Maps software;
• Familiarity with common computer software (Microsoft Office Suite, Sharepoint);
• Experience using the Nova Scotia Forest Ecosystem Classification guide (strong asset).
• Current Wilderness or Standard First Aid Training (strong asset);
• Valid Driver’s License and able to rent a car (mandatory).

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a full-time, 13-month maternity leave fill-in position.

This is a hybrid position, based in Halifax, NS, and requires the ability and willingness to travel throughout Nova Scotia to NCC nature reserves with frequent multi-day overnights and some weekend work. Travel expenses are reimbursed.

Conversational French speaking is considered an asset, as is previous experience working in or with Indigenous communities / organizations
