Life Large Case Underwriting Consultant Principal

This senior-level underwriting role serves as a subject matter expert responsible for evaluating complex life insurance risks across a wide range of case sizes and profiles. You will independently assess medical, financial, and personal risk factors to determine appropriate underwriting classifications and approvals, including cases up to auto-bind authority. The position plays a key role in guiding underwriting decisions, supporting internal teams, and ensuring consistency with risk philosophy and guidelines. Beyond casework, you will act as a mentor and technical resource, helping elevate team capability and underwriting quality. You will also collaborate closely with distribution partners, reinsurers, and internal stakeholders to communicate decisions and strengthen relationships. The role offers exposure to industry forums and strategic initiatives, contributing to continuous improvement and innovation within underwriting operations.

Accountabilities:
  • Independently evaluate and underwrite routine to highly complex life insurance cases by analyzing medical records, financial data, exams, and other requirements to determine appropriate risk classification.
  • Apply delegated underwriting authority, including auto-bind decisions, while ensuring alignment with internal guidelines and risk standards.
  • Document underwriting assessments and decisions accurately within system platforms and maintain clear case records.
  • Communicate underwriting outcomes to agents, field distribution, and internal partners while explaining decisions and offering guidance on alternative case approaches.
  • Serve as a technical expert and informal leader by mentoring underwriters, supporting workload coordination, and contributing to team development.
  • Collaborate with reinsurers, vendors, and internal stakeholders to resolve case issues and ensure smooth processing.
  • Contribute to guideline enhancements, operational improvements, and departmental initiatives while representing underwriting in industry discussions and partner meetings.
  • Utilize digital and AI-enabled tools to support underwriting efficiency and decision-making.
Requirements:
  • 8+ years of experience in life insurance underwriting, with demonstrated expertise in complex case management.
  • Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, medical-related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Strong knowledge of medical and financial risk assessment, underwriting principles, and insurance product structures.
  • Proven ability to make sound independent decisions under minimal supervision in high-complexity scenarios.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical decisions clearly to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Experience mentoring or supporting junior underwriters or cross-functional teams is highly preferred.
  • Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future visa sponsorship requirements.
