Summary
The Director, Strategy & Product Portfolio is responsible for helping establish the strategic planning, product portfolio governance, and enterprise decision-making disciplines required to scale Stored Energy Systems profitably and sustainably.
Reporting to the CFO and sponsored by the CEO, this role serves as an enterprise strategic partner and cross-functional integrator—bringing rigor, clarity, and economic discipline to growth prioritization, product investment, portfolio management, and capital allocation decisions across the enterprise.
The position helps ensure executive leadership has a credible fact base, transparent trade-offs, and scalable management processes to support long-term value creation.
This is a highly influential individual contributor role designed to improve enterprise alignment, strategic focus, and decision quality without direct functional ownership or PMO-style administration.
Responsibilities
Market Strategy & Growth Enablement
- Lead and support market assessments including TAM/SAM analysis, segmentation, competitive positioning, and growth opportunity evaluation across key end markets
- Partner with Sales, Engineering, and leadership teams to develop actionable market intelligence and strategic growth insights
- Participate in selected customer meetings, industry events, and strategic account discussions to strengthen understanding of customer needs, buying drivers, and market dynamics
- Improve voice-of-customer (VOC) integration into strategic planning, product portfolio decisions, and growth initiatives
- Support evaluation of strategic partnerships, channel opportunities, and go-to-market expansion initiatives
Product Portfolio Strategy & Lifecycle Management
- Establish and institutionalize an enterprise product portfolio framework
- Define and embed product lifecycle stages (introduce, grow, optimize, harvest, exit)
- Enable clear product ownership and decision accountability across product families
- Introduce economic decision criteria (revenue, margin, complexity, capital intensity) based on outside-in perspectives (examples: total addressable markets, market segmentations, competitive landscape, etc.)
- Support portfolio rationalization and targeted investment decisions
Capital Allocation & Resource Prioritization
- Partner with Finance to align strategic and portfolio decisions with enterprise capital allocation priorities
- Support prioritization and governance of major growth and transformation initiatives
- Define success metrics, investment milestones, and exit / kill criteria for strategic investments
- Ensure resource deployment aligns with enterprise priorities and return thresholds
Enterprise Strategic Planning
- Support development and maintenance of the company’s 3–5 year strategic plan
- Establish and manage a repeatable annual strategic planning cadence, distinct from budgeting
- Translate strategy into enterprise priorities and initiatives
- Facilitate executive alignment on strategic choices, sequencing, and constraints
- Partner with CEO, CFO and the rest of ELT as needed to prepare board- and PE-ready strategic materials
Cross-Functional Leadership & Organizational Scale
- Act as a trusted partner to Sales, Engineering, Operations, and Finance leaders
- Facilitate structured decision-making without adding bureaucracy
- Introduce common frameworks and language for strategy and product discussions
- Improve decision quality across the enterprise through clarity and focus
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree required; preference for Business, Engineering, Finance, Economics, Strategy, Operations, or related technical disciplines
- 10+ years of experience in strategy, portfolio management, product portfolio leadership, consulting, or general management
- Direct experience supporting hyperscale, colocation, enterprise, or greenfield data center development initiatives is highly desirable, including exposure to power infrastructure planning, backup power systems, energy resilience, or related mission-critical infrastructure investments
- Demonstrated experience building strategy, product, or portfolio processes in scaling organizations
- Demonstrated track record in delivering growth and winning market share
- Prior exposure to PE-backed or board-governed environments preferred or successes with Board / Enterprise approved substantial / transformational product investments
- Enterprise-level strategic thinking grounded in economic reality
- Strong financial fluency (P&L, margins, capital trade-offs)
- Solid understanding in setting product definitions of IT systems, such as ERP, CRM, etc.
- Ability to synthesize complex inputs into clear, executive-level recommendations
- Credible partner to senior executives; able to influence without authority
- Strong facilitation, communication, and executive-level writing skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in mission-critical infrastructure, critical power systems, data center infrastructure, power quality, energy storage, electrification, utility, industrial, or energy markets
- MBA or other advanced business or technical degree
- Combination of business and technical education strongly preferred given the cross-functional nature of the role
Location: This position is located on-site in Longmont, CO.
Base Compensation: $187,000 - $217,000 is the projected range of annual base salary for this role depending on the candidate’s overall qualifications and experience.
Bonus: This position is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance as well as participation in the company's equity incentive program.
Closing Date: August 12, 2026. While we expect to keep the position open through this date, the posting may be extended or closed early based on applicant volume and hiring needs.
